Flying High

I want to begin by sharing some thoughts about the review I gave last Saturday. The person who chose "To Risk It All: Nine Conflicts and the Crucible of Decision" had two copies because one copy belonged to her and one to her father who had served with, and was a friend of, Admiral Stavridis, the author.  Everyone read the book and most of us enjoyed it, or at least part of it.  Seems we took our responsibility seriously and we had a lively discussion about all the chapters.  Some chapters were more "lively" than others.

Our current president told us we should NOT feel obligated to buy a book we reviewed unless we were in love with it and wanted it in our own library.  She also said when it's our turn, we must provide at least two, or possibly three copies of the book we are to review.  She suggested making sure if the book didn't come from our own library, like the Stavridis book which came from the owners of the books, we should pick a book from our library system and put a hold on as many as possible.  No e-books or kindle books were allowed since several of the group didn't use those.

Elizabeth Vardan suggested I choose one of her mysteries when it's my turn, but I would need to buy at least two books, which is not something I can afford and my library doesn't own either of hers (I checked).   Having said that, I know the one I'm going to choose when it's my turn.  Now for some visual art!

This will be my final entry at Art Journal Journey this month. Alison from Craftytrog's Arty Adventures has chosen Come Fly With Me as her theme.  I'm also joining Creative Artiste's 95th Challenge.  Their theme is always anything goes as long as you have multiple media (meaning a minimum of three mediums).

For obvious reasons,

this is called Flying High.

It is echoed in the tag

and the die cut.

I started by spritzing several of my handmade shimmering mists on book pages I intended to use for backgrounds.  Once I had completed coloring the pages, I was surprised and pleased how nicely the 110 lb cardstock looked.  I decided to fill in the spots that didn't have any mist on it, and this fun background was born.  I used one of the mists to color the die cut hot air balloon, but I was unable to remove several of the cut outs.

When my friend Sharon and I had our first play date, she brought her stamps and die that I used on the above journal page.  I provided the tag.  I cut a piece of the book page I had misted and wrote the words Flying High using my white Posca pen which decided to leak when I wrote the word "High."  In order to connect the two sides of the page, I adhered a strip of cheese cloth I dyed with coffee.  My only regret is the tag is ultra white and I wish I had been able to find a way to color it after it had been stamped with dye ink.

Creative Artiste requires multiple media.  Mine are my spray misted background, gold paint as part of the background, part of a misted book page, my white Posca pen, coffee dyed cheese cloth, a colored die cut, and a die cut tag I stamped using two different hot air balloon rubber stamps.

Thanks for joining me today.  I only wish I had another week or so to join Alison's theme.  Please join me over at Creative Artiste and Art Journal Journey as we wind this month down.

I think I would never dare go up in a air balloon.

This came out great (though no ten horses could drag me into such a thing! ;-)...)

I adore balloons and treasure the memories of flights I have made. Yours made me wistful - and delighted me.
I have never heard of a bookclub requiring you to purchase copies of the book for others to use. I can see the point, but...

I think you are wise to go with choosing a mainstream book that respected critics have read, especially with a mystery. Book clubs that I have belonged to did require members to find their own books, but usually there were library copies, and people passed around the copies they found (either in a bookstore or a library). I look forward to hearing what mystery you select.

That is tricky, having to buy extra books.
We had a giant book sale at our library last week. I donated some. Good times.

Fun page. I like how some of the drips look like balloons, too.

These colors are amazing. And I like the idea of a balloon. I haven't thought of that for flying. Adding the cheesecloth like you did adds some super texture. I really like that too. This is a cool page. And sorry to read about having trouble commenting on some blogs. Google is still making it difficult for me to add photos unless I put them into an album. I usually haven't done that and need to go back and then do that in order to write a post. Grrr. And that's a lot to ask of book club members to have 2 copies available. Books aren't cheap, and sometimes libraries won't or can't put so many on hold. It's interesting how she said you shouldn't have to buy a book, unless of course it's your pick and you have to have a couple of copies to lend. Hmmm. I guess I am used to a more loosey goosey group. I hope you're having a great weekend Elizabeth. And I hope it's not too hot, either. hugs-Erika

Your page is Amazing Elizabeth! I looove the so lovely background you have created with your handmade shimmering mists, I always like them a lot. Those hot air balloons are very beautiful, yes, we can fly very high. Personally I like the white tag, it´s a lovely contrast with the background, really beautiful.
I wish you a very nice weekend dear friend,

I've never heard of a book club where you had to provide books for anybody but yourself. Interesting concept, but as limited as library holdings seem to be these days and as expensive as books are even in paperback...

I'd love a balloon ride :)

I have never heard of a book club where they expect you to provide some extra copies for members. Plus then you have a member wanting you to choose their book? How odd. At least to me.

I love the colours of your sprays, I'm sure the view from a hot air balloon would be great but not sure I'd go in one! It's a great page to add to Alison's AJJ theme, hugs Chrisx

I love the colours and the composition of this page Elizabeth.
One of the best things we ever did as a family was to take a sunrise hot air balloon flight on a holiday in Turkey. It was amazing, especially the fact that I did it, considering that I'm scared of heights!
Thanks for having me back to host the challenge this month :-)

So bright and beautiful Elizabeth, how exciting to have had a creative play date what a lovely time time you must have had, evident from your cheery page. I love those die cut air balloons, what wonders you would see to ride and fly high in one.
Thank you for sharing @ Creative Artiste's July Mixed Media Challenge, lovely to see you there...
Creative Hugs & best wishes. Take care Tracey xx

Your book club rule sounds interesting. I like that having a book to loan as a 'rule' is not a bad idea, but an expensive one. Lately our book club (which I'm not attending for a bit) is into really new stuff or things not in the library which makes it frustrating.
