Week 9 of Index-Card-A-Day or ICAD

 

It's Friday and time for ICADs.  Bleubeard and I are relieved we have made it through another, our 14th year of ICADs.  I'm joining Nicole for Friday Face-Off and Gillena for Art For Fun Fridays along with Tammy Garcia at Daisy Yellow (Index-Card-A-Day).      

Day 55: Flag.  Background is Encyclopedia.  Red dry erase color.  Postage stamp is Freedom Flag, a forever stamp first issued in 2023.  Names in red felt tip pen.

 

Day 56: Priority.  Background is vintage sheet music. Blue and red dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Railroad Mail Car, 1920s.*  Names in red felt tip pen. 

*A part of the Transportation Series used in bulk rate postage and met the single-piece rate for first-class mailings presorted to a five-digit ZIP Code.  First issued August 16, 1988.      

Day 57: Colorful.  Background is Spanish text. Green, red, and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is postcard rate Hot Air Balloon first issued in 1991.  Names in blue felt tip pen.

 

Day 58: Moon.  Background is Crossword. Green and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Neptune(?). Names in blue felt tip pen.

 

Day 59: Fly.  Background is Spanish text.  Red and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Christmas Angel (an Alterpiece at Metropolitan Museum)*. Names in red felt tip pen.

 

* The 1974 10¢ “Angel Altarpiece” postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on October 23, 1974, in Washington, D.C., as part of its Traditional Christmas series. This stamp features a detail from a Renaissance masterpiece by the Italian painter Melozzo da Forlì (1438–1494).  The design reproduces Melozzo da Forlì’s “Angel with Trumpet,” a fresco fragment originally painted around 1480 as part of a larger composition, The Ascension of Christ, for the Church of Santi Apostoli in Rome. Melozzo was celebrated for his pioneering use of perspective and for the grace and serenity of his angelic figures, which appeared to float effortlessly in heavenly space. The fresco was removed from the church in the 18th century, and surviving sections—including this angel—are now preserved in the Vatican Pinacoteca and the Quirinal Palace in Rome.

 

Day 60: Vintage.  Background is Russian text. Green and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is 1870s Coal Car, part of the Transportation Series, used in bulk rate (third class or presorted) postage.  First issued  July 19, 1988.  Names in green felt tip pen.

 

Day 61: Independence.  Background is Encyclopedia.  Red dry erase color.  Postage stamp is Independence Hall.*  Names in red felt tip pen.

*Originally known as the Pennsylvania State House, it is the site located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where both the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were debated and adopted.

Week 8 of Index-Card-A-Day or ICAD

Day 48: Independent.  Background is Crossword. Green and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Spirit of 76 (I wish I had found that stamp in time for July 4). Names in blue felt tip pen. 

 

Day 49: Hero. Background is Encyclopedia. Red and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Dwight David Eisenhower (34th President of the United States, serving from 1953 to 1961, and known for his role as the Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe). Names in red felt tip pen.

 

Day 50: Birdsong.  Background is vintage sheet music. Green and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Bird on a flowering branch. Names in blue felt tip pen.

Day 51: Ancient.  Background is French text.  Green dry erase color.  Postage stamp is Pterranodon (genus of large, toothless, flying reptiles known as pterosaurs, with wingspans to over 20 feet/6 meters, which lived during the Late Cretaceous period). Names in green felt tip pen.

 

Day 52: Ring. Background is Russian text. Red and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Bell (6.3 cents)  [The 6.3 cent Liberty Bell postage stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service in October, 1974 and is part of a series that commemorates the Liberty Bell, symbolizing American independence. It is a collectible item and can still be used for mailing]. Names in red felt tip pen.

 

Day 53: Cactus.  Background is Russian text. Green and red dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Bee on a flower. Names in red felt tip pen.  Not sure why I chose the word of the day, but I had nothing else prepared.

 

Day 54: Intricate.  Background is vintage sheet music. Green, blue, and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is North Carolina Statehood, 1789.  Issue date August, 1989*. Names in green felt tip pen.

 

*From 1987-1990, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of stamps commemorating the signing of the Constitution by representatives of the first 13 Colonies.  The stamps were issued in the 200th year after each state approved the Constitution, in the order each colony became a state.  Every stamp shows traditional symbols of the state.

Day 43: Relevant.  Background is French text. Green and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Frank Lloyd Wright (a famous architect of the 20th century).  Names computer generated.

Day 44: Fresh.  Background is vintage sheet music. Green and red dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is lemons. Names in red felt tip pen.

Day 45: Huge.  Background is Russian text. Green and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Venezuela dam. Names in green felt tip pen.

Day 46: End.  Background is Spanish text. Red and brown dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Help End Hunger. Names in red felt tip pen.

Day 47: Cat (It's Squiggles' birthday).  Background is Spanish text. Red and blue dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is Postage Due*. Names in red felt tip pen.

 

*Postage Due stamps were issued from 1880 to November, 1985.  They were issued because postmasters who received cash didn't always claim the money at the end of the day. According to the Smithsonian Postal Museum:

The 1880 Report of the Postmaster General noted that the former system of collecting postage due had one great weakness: “In securing the full returns of [the postage due collected in cash] the department was entirely dependent on the fidelity of the postmasters.” Postage due stamps, affixed to underpaid mail as receipts for the underpayment collected, solved that problem by requiring postmasters to account for cash receipts that would balance any postage due stamps no longer in stock, in the same way that they had to account for regular postage stamp sales.

* 32nd president of the United States. The longest serving US president and the only one to serve more than two terms.  Diagnosed with polio. Left him permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Used hydrotherapy to heal his paralysis.

Day 40: Horsy.  Background is Russian text.  Brown and green dry erase colors.  Postage stamp is another carousel horse.  Names in green felt tip pen. (I always advance my date stamp to the next day.  This time I forgot to do so.  Stamping over the previous day's stamp only created a bigger mess).
