Today I am sharing this journal entry with Elle from Empire of the Cat, our host this month at Art Journal Journey. I've actually had this post ready since the first of the month, but was waiting for my friend Joseph Peck to get his new web site up and running. His current web site is here. The new site features snippets of everything from classical to calypso to relaxation to rock to drum circles. In case you didn't know, Joseph plays steel drums.
Long ago, when I was still in grad school, my friend Joseph Peck lived in my basement and was already banging away on the steel drums.
It was at that time, he told me that music is the universal language.
I've never forgotten it, and that is how this journal entry came about.
I used several different sheets of vintage music. I love how the color varies depending on the age of the paper. I used cream and black variegated thread to hold everything together.
This is the entire journal page with all the sewing. The sentiment was computer generated and outlined using black dye ink. But that doesn't explain the title of my post today.
However, if you click on this link, you will be taken to Joseph's site where you can hear the song that became the title of today's post. The first time I heard it, Joseph only played the steel drum. I actually cried when I heard it and then he told me he had written it for me. I asked if I could name it and I called it Appreciation. It is the only album not published by Joseph himself. He and a band he formed in Florida called Trouble Creek went into a studio in Missouri, where I joined him while he was recording the album called Blue Earth. I paid for the five day recording session, the master, which he has, and the first 1000 copies of the CD. There are 10 songs on the CD, and Appreciation is the final song. Although it is over 10 minutes long, the first 3 minutes and about 20 seconds features mostly Joseph and his steel drum. Much of the rest of the instrumental features the other instrumentalists. The music was written and composed by Joseph.

Oh, how sweet you got your very own, beautiful song!!! Dreamy, I like it!
The title is more than perfect. (Bet he cried, too, in thanks).
Lucky you, this is wonderful.
You are right about music. It is universal. And a language just about everyone can appreciate. And so many beautiful or interesting forms too. You made a wonderful page today. It is really interesting how many different and thought provoking pages there has been this month. And nice you got to sit in on a recording session. Sounds like a fun adventure. I will check out his page once I get through posting comments. I hope you have a great Saturday Elizabeth. Thanks for sharing this language idea with us also. Hugs-Erika

This is such a good entry for the theme and a very true statement -- about the universality of it. I understand exactly what you mean about the music and the piece you heard.
Wow, now that is a gift. Great post. Have a nice day.
Hello from Holland, To be honest I can't read nuts (I just eat them ; ) ) but I appreciate a friend sharing this with you. And it is therefore a very beautiful gift. Music has many notes and melodies that are loved and also says a lot about the person behind it. Music sweeps the dust off your soul and also what is hidden and I have visit him and listened and it tells a story too. Thank you for sharing, but also for your response to my letter and I hope to see you again. Greetings from the Netherlands from the beautiful surroundings of the Alblasserwaard because the Netherlands has much more than just the well-known Amsterdam. (I left a comment also for you where you has respons.)
A wonderful page Elizabeth, I love the added stitching.
And what an amazing gift of music from your friend Joseph. I'm listening as I type :-) It reminds me a bit of Pink Floyd, one of my favourite bands.
Hope you're having a good weekend,
Alison xx
Perfect pairing of art and music. Beautiful, both of them.

All the best Jan
This is brilliantly designed, love music and love that stitching. x
A memorable friendship can last between you and Joseph. Hopefully it lasts forever. I'm going to visit Joseph's blog.
Have a nice week!
How special to get a song written for you. And how special that you paid for the recording.
I always love it when your art has sewn elements.
It's great that you have your own song and that's a true friendship. The music connects.Your sheet of music with seams as a journal page has become impressive.
Have a happy day, hug Elke
A fabulous page in honour of your friend Joseph Peck, I will take a look at his website as I love steel drum music. Our church used to have a steel drum band until the person who ran it died. Hugs, Chrisx
Not many of us can say we have had a song composed for us. Wow, what a great thing to happen to you.
I so agree with him that Music is the universal music - it can be used to say so many different things and create so many different moods.
Thanks for this post - now off to listen to your friend.
Hugs, Neet xxx
A fabulous page and tribute to your friend. Music is so comforting , soothing, motivational, uplifting I could go on with many words to relate to how music can effect us when we take time to sit and listen and not just have it playing in the background. This is a fabulous page for the AJJ theme.
Stay safe.
Yvonne xx
I love your music page with all the different shades of sheet music. I also listened to the full 10 mins of the song, and really enjoyed it. I was expecting something different with "steel drums" but they sound so different than what I was expecting. Thanks for joining me for the Language theme at Art Journal Journey this month Elle xx
