Apple Pie

Bleubeard and I are back today with another entry for Art Journal Journey.  You may have noticed we are hosting this month.  Our theme is Whats Your Style?

He and I are offering a bit of humor in my Coll-ah-ge Two altered book.

My grandmother (grandparents raised me from birth) made the best pies in the world.  The crusts were rich and flaky, and she always made a pie every Sunday.  I personally would rather have pie than cake.  Although her two crust fruit pies looked much like the one above, I much preferred cream pies.  She "invented" one just for me: peanut butter butterscotch!

Bleubeard has something to say about my apple pie.  He thinks the one in the drawing above looks far better than any I make.  You can't please every critic.

I found these images in a book published in 1972 on the latest cooking utensils and equipment.  Interspersed with the new items were photos of old ones.  I thought this was so incredibly funny, I had to use it.  Bleubeard thought I should learn to make good pies.

I started this page by coloring it with two watercolors: deep red and yellow.  Unfortunately the yellow was overpowered by the red.  Once the watercolors were dry, I computer generated the sentiments and affixed them to the images from the book.  Today my style is food, specifically pie, along with a bit of humor on Bleubeard's part.

Bleubeard and I are delighted you joined us and hope to see you at Art Journal Journey with your own interpretation of What's your style?

Mmmmmm pies.
My mother made excellent pastry too. I rarely cook pies. With just the two of us it doesn't seem worth the effort.

The red color fit perfectly on the great old pie drawings, as well the on your computer generating words. A Great idea from you!
Happy Sunday and upcoming week xx

Sweet your Grandma made pies just for you, nice tribute for her.
We just do hearty pies, but now I crave for a sweet one! And we still have vanilla ice-cream (which goes perfectly with apple pie/cake).

Bleubeard would want tuna pie or meat pie rather than apple I think. Smile. Yup, collapsed pie. Been there. It's frustrating when it happens, but this is a good smile. And once again, it is so you and perfect for AJJ. Of course now I'd like a piece of good apple pie. Happy rest of your weekend. Hugs-Erika

What a great graphic. And yes, it is far prettier than any pie I would make -- apple or otherwise!

I like pies, too, but I confess I use the crusts I find in the dairy section at the grocery ;) I buy my apple pies ready made, but I like them.

My sister makes us apple pie almost every time we see her. I have posted many photos of her pies -- the most recent one looks just like your "good" pie. Photo here:

I love this Elizabeth! Tell Bleubeard that it doesn't matter what they look like if they taste good, they all go down the same way! :D

This is hilarious!! It reminds me of the time my hubby tried to make a pizza. It did not resemble a pizza at all. I have a picture of it somewhere. I have to say my pies turn out well...let me rephrase, my apple pie. I have not made any other. My dad used to eat chedder cheese with apple pie because he grew up near Ottawa area and this is a Quebequer thing. I love the background you created. I may not see yellow but I see oranges and other variations so it turned out well.

A fantastic page and you have me thinking of my grans cooking, she always baked her own bread and the homely smells as you would have when the apple pies were baking are good memories to have. A great page and inspiration from yourself and Bleubeard for your theme at AJJ.

Yum-both pies look good to me! My grandmother were both fantastic cooks. I also had a step-grandma who could cook. My grandparents were all very important in my life too....

Pie and Mash is a delicacy in some parts of the country around London. Don't know much about it but when I saw it on tv I was not that bothered about trying one. Apparently it's a minced meat pie, mashed potatoes and liquor (which is parsley sauce).
Wigan, a town not too far from me is famous for its pies - people from Wigan are known as "pie eaters". It dates back to 1926 and the General Strike when miners were starved back to work before other areas so had to eat "humble pie".
Where I am and in lots of the north west of England Pie and Peas (mushy peas) is a favourite at the chippy. (Fish and chip shop).
Love your pies in the picture, pastry looks amazing and I bet your gran made the best.
Hugs, Neet xx

I love this page Elizabeth! My Mum used to make amazing pastry. We lived in the country and folk would give her fruit but only if she promised them a pie. Most Sundays I would be carrying a pie down to a neighbour who gave us all his fruit. She used to make jam and pickles too and give them away as thank you gifts, including the bus driver who used to drop us off at our door to save us walking - we were half way between stops and either were quite a walk! My pastry never lived uptown my Mums! Hugs, Chrisx
