London Times

I'm once again joining Neet at Hickydorums, our host this month at Art Journal Journey, who has chosen Type as her theme

Today we are visiting The London Times, the most read newspaper in the U.K.

Although it has nothing to do with the newspaper, Times New Roman is a favorite type/font chosen by many.

The London Times started publishing in January, 1788.

It was the first newspaper to use the word Times as part of its name.  This led to other newspapers like the New York Times following suit.  Even though the name of the paper is The London Times, it is read by much of England.

A little known fact is the New London Times not only created their own newspaper, which was the first to use the word Times, the paper also created its own typeface, appropriately called New London Times.  I can't believe my WordPerfect spell checker didn't catch approproately.  Blogger's sure did!

I had a bit of trouble sharing/photographing close-ups

of this man who looked like he might have read The London Times back in the day.

I had the same problem with the two men I placed on this side of the page.

I thought the man in the long coat looked like he might be a newspaper reporter for The London Times.

For this page, I began by researching the London Times when I learned they invented their own font/type.  I found this copy of the London Times on the internet and copied it to a sheet of 110 lb. cardstock.  I computer generated the information about the Times and cut the cardstock to size.  I then mounted both sides to black cardstock backing.  Finally, I added three of the TH paper dolls who looked like they might all be from the same era.  It was hard finding three the same size and era.  Actually, the man on the left looks like he came from an earlier era, but I wasn't going to discount him since he appeared to fit nicely on the page.

Thank you ever so much for visiting todayBleubeard, and I are delighted you joined us and hope to see you soon at Art Journal Journey with your own take on Neet's theme Type

And for those of you who have been following the saga of the bamboo,

here are photos from the clean up.  Sorry, blogger refuses to left justify for some reason.

Some of you have asked about the clean-up.  The City of Wichita supports and pays for these cleanups out of their budget.  Each neighborhood association who requests a clean up is entitled to one a year.  On a normal cleanup, I would be right there helping throw items into the packer truck, or riding along with a packer driver guiding him through these streets as I have done in times past, like here in 2008, or here in 2009.  I have been doing this a long time, just not always documenting it.

This however, was not a normal clean up for me.  Yes, that is my camera strap in the photo.  As you can see, there are ample volunteers.

Old and young alike come out to help for this event.  Be aware, there were four packer trucks working their way through the neighborhood this year, so this was just 1/4th the number of volunteers who came out to help.  We have a very strong neighborhood association and I am very proud of the work that is done in it.

Often volunteers must stand around waiting for the packer to crush the trash.

The bamboo is finally gone!

The last of the trash bags (all filled with bamboo) and brush were going in the truck.

It was now time for the volunteers

to move to the next pile of trash to be removed.

There was also quite a back up of cars and trucks trying to navigate around the packer truck and volunteers, too.

And then, as quickly as it started, it was completely over.  My block was now trash free and the volunteers had moved to the next block.

We have now reached the end of the bamboo saga that has taken over my life for the previous week.   Thanks for following along on this journey.

As for my ear, it is marginally better.  I'm not sure what I am going to do about it yet, but I know I am NOT going to an immediate care doctor.  S/he will just give me ear drops and tell me not to get my ear wet.  I had this problem when I was swimming a lot, so I think I know what needs to be done.  I hope to be able to catch up with all my friends today, but I keep saying that, I know.  Thanks for your continued support.

Love your page, not the typo, though. And yes, blogger still sucks big. I wonder how and why. And what will be next. I cannot edit my blogroll and to many it´s gone altogether.
If you´re not into HTML you´re lost!
But, well, it´s for free, right...

Awwww, that chair at the verandah! Beautiful!
And great all the trash is gone.
Hope your ear is OK soon.

I am glad that your ear is marginally better - and hope it picks up the pace.
What an EXCELLENT clean up job.
And thanks for the information about the London Times - and its very own type face.

How interesting that The Times invented its own font. I wish magazines and books would tell us what font they use, they sometimes do but not often. The gentlemen look quite happy to be on the front page of the 1788 edition, a nice idea, Elizabeth.
What a tale that has been about your bamboo clear-up and the collection. It sound like quite a social event. At first I thought it was just garden collection but it seems like it is a lot more. You certainly saw that bamboo off.
Love from Sheila

Times New Roman is probably the font I mostly use in Word documents. I had no idea it originated with the London Times, what an interesting fact.
Wonderful that you get so many volunteers helping with the cleanup in your neighbourhood.
Here when the city council schedules verge cleanups, the "greens" and the other stuff are not done at the same time. From the "greens" they make mulch that can be purchased from them.

Good morning Elizabeth-great post-Loved your page for the theme Type, this is a great thing the city is doing-a free trash day at the curb. glad you got all of your bamboo finished up too. Hoping your ear heals up soon-if self treating perhaps do an online search for a homeopathic or herbal help. Happy Monday hugs

Love this vintage journal and the history behind The London Times. Those men look so proud to stand with the paper that I think they’ve all at one time or another worked for a newspaper. The paper dolls were a perfect decision to bring your journal page to life. And it was very interesting reading the history behind the paper and the font.
The cleanup day looks to have been a magnificent success. I imagine you are really enjoying your yards now and having a feeling of great accomplishment in clearing away so much bamboo.

I like your page. I think the fellow with the cap sells the newspapers. The gent with the bow tie is a customer and I like the idea the fellow in the topcoat is a reporter. I'm a fan of the Times New Roman font so that was an interesting piece of trivia to learn, too.

we are lucky if the regular weekly trash truck shows up when it's supposed to; not just my neighborhood, the entire city and that's recycle and trash ~~~~~~~~~~~~ so long bamboo !!! ☺☺♥♥

Love your art. The city doing this clean up is excellent.

That's a wonderful clean-up program your city offers!

Sounds like you have swimmer's ear then... Yes, there's a fix for that. My husband used to get it sometimes. I've seen half and half rubbing alcohol and white vinegar recommended. I hope you're well soon.

Ahh...Now I know why no ear doctor. Dr's are a_holes until proven otherwise as I have had my share of that type of crap. I think an ear specialist could see something. It truly sounds like some ear infection where you need medicine and not just drops. Who am I though and I just gave unsolicited advise which I am famous for :)) Sorry about that. I am glad that huge garbage crap is finally all picked up. You wonder how some people can live.

Ughh..menopausal brain...I love the journal page because you grabbed the look and feel of the eras. The guy on the left with the very stiff collar, looks like he is from, circa 1912 while the other 2 look more from the 20s. I love that font and didn't think it was from a newspaper but it makes sense.

I love your page and I didn't know about thie history of Times Roman type so thanks for teaching me something new today. And I'm very glad you shared about your pick up and what the neighborhood does here. I really admire that and wish they did something like that here.
