And so another AEDM begins

Before we begin this Art Every Day Month, or AEDM journey, I have some housekeeping that needs to be discussed.  As those of you who visit all the time know, I post my Second on the 2nd each month at midnight my time.  However, since some of you, as well as myself, may be joining this November challenge, I need to keep AEDM's schedule this month.  For that reason, I will be posting at 10:00 pm or 22:00 my time (CST as of Nov. 1)  (GMT 2:00 or 2:00 am the next day). T Stands For Tuesday will still be posted at 4:00 pm or 16:00 CST (GMT  20:00, or 8:00 pm).  Other than T, I will be posting every evening through November 30 sometime between 10 and 10:45 pm CST.  It's that pesky 24 hour clock and different time zones that causes all this confusion.  But I'm sure we'll all survive, since many of you who visit aren't in my time zone, anyway.

Today (actually tonight) is Day 1 of Art Every Day Month or AEDM. AEDM was started by Leah Piken Kolidas over 10 years ago as a challenge to make art every day for a full month.  This will be my fourth year participating, and it can get quite intense, because, unlike Leah, who creates a painting every day (a genuinely difficult undertaking with two young children), I try different things each November.  Some are projects I've worked on in the past, and want to revisit.  Some are totally new, where there's the possibility I may fail, even after working on them several days.  Regardless, you will get a good decent idea what I do on this blog by the end of the month of November.  So, I hope you make it a daily habit to visit, even if it's just to see what I might be showcasing that day, whether it's an altered book page, a sewing project, an organization tip, putting my herb garden to bed, or any of my challenges.

EDIT: As I was visiting AEDM participants, I realized I am unable to leave comments if you have a "G + response only" blog.  It's all in the way your comments are set up.

For the first day, I've created a quick spread in one of my altered books.

This is just a subtle reminder that most of North America will set their clocks back at 2:00 am.  I hope you can tell that the mask I used was backward, but the homemade shimmering spray mists had a tendency to spread under the mask.

I've also started a series where the substrate is a hard back book cover.

I was gifted with many old hard back books, and I've decided to experiment with the book covers.  This was actually a prototype

of Christmas gifts I plan to make. Right now it looks a bit plain, so I have to come up with something to jazz it up a bit.

The first layer is from an old telephone book, the second layer is tissue paper.  For the third layer, I used heavy black cardstock, then more of the same tissue.  The next layer was some Christmas scrapbook paper I have in my stash.  The final layer is a purchased embellishment from the Susan Winget line at K & Company.  I bought the embellishment on clearance last year, so I doubt it would still be available.

Because there were several layers, this should qualify for

Try it on Tuesday or TioT whose theme this fortnight is Lots of Layers.

Thanks for joining me for Day 1 of AEDM where I created a spread in one of my altered books and started a new series using hard back book covers as the substrate.  The prototype I created is not finished (and a bit bland), but should qualify for Try it on Tuesday.   I look forward to reconnecting with many AEDM participants who I don't have a chance to visit most of the rest of the year, as well as my daily readers, visitors, and new Try it on Tuesday friends.

Hi Elizabeth,

This is lovely! Congrats for being this year's first participant to link up at AEDM!

So I am sitting here writing Inspire Me Monday - trying to remember to change my clocks - and all of sudden it dawns on me "It's November 1 - that means it's the beginning of Art Every Day Month!"

Not sure when my month will start - but I'll see what I can do!

Again we go back, as if that is possible, ha. Nice use of the book cover. They make such a great substrate. Been thinking of backer boards for bitsy doll pockets. My mind flies off in some new direction. Keeping the fingers stitching. xox

Your clock piece turned out great E...great soft look to it.
It is easier gaining an hour than losing one I find.
Great use of the book cover which is a nice sturdy substrate.
Know you'll make the most of your November challenges.
Happy first Sunday in November oxo

Lovely journal page on time which is also apt for AEDM - we may all be wishing we could turn the clock back to gain a few hours to complete a day's creation! Loving the bookcovers too.

Hello,
Looking forward to seeing what you get up to on AEDM this year.
I have plenty of old books that have been 'donated'. I find the covers are great for handmade diaries and notebooks; i.e. Christmas presents :D

I love the pastel colors in the one about turning back time--especially the luscious green! With my over-50 eyesight, I might not have picked up on the backwardness of the clock, but the combination of the circular form and the colors really works for me--like a magical representation of a perfect head of cabbage or kale or iceberg lettuce. :)

I'm curious about how you came to love altered books. Have you written about that, somewhere you could point me to?

Thanks for dropping by my blog and commenting! I left a follow-up Q for you about waterfalls, there, if you feel inclined to say more.

Best wishes for the month—it's good to see you and your work again!

Well you have certainly started off with a very clever use of the daylight saving hour; your backwards clock is inspired! I hope I will get to visit everyday, but will certainly visit as much as possible. Good luck with AEDM and have FuN!! :D :D

I'm loving your clock. When did we get this far into the year that we're turning back clocks? Amazing how fast this year went. I hope you had a great Halloween and ate buckets of candy. Nice to touch base again! See you throughout the month, visiting from AEDM

You certainly have a lot going on . I'm not doing AEDM this year .. I just don't have the energy and already have to much to do this month. Hopefully next year will be better. I like what you've done with the book-covers and think they are just right ♥
