Summer of Color: Mint chocolate chip

It's the second week of the Summer of Color hosted by Kristin at Twinkle, Twinkle. I had intended to get her fabulous Ice Cream image attached to the side of my blog, showing my participation, but sadly, I had a bit of trouble with Blogger this week. Thankfully I'm here, now.

This week was all about mint ice cream with bits of dark chocolate. I thought about my coffee stained background paper I had waiting in the wings, just begging to be used as a book page in a scrappy journal.

I fear I covered most of the "dark chocolate" with the pocket I created from an addition flash card I color washed with brown acrylic paint. I have the tags all ready to go, and might even add some fibers after they have been scanned. This is the outside page 1.

The center pages (designated pages 2 and 3) had various techniques. On the left, I used a brown wash to paint a doily, then attached it to a piece of National Geographic magazine image that was blurred by the use of turpentine (I suggest using something less smelly like Citra-Solv, but it was all I had at the time). To those pieces I added a wedge of shaving cream paper.

On the right I used mint green acrylic paint to dry brush the photo pass. Two rubber stamps complete the look of the page.

For the back side, or page 4, I started with a vintage image from a calendar. To that I added another doily, this time painted with mint green acrylic paint, as was the slide mount/holder. I dribbled dark brown paint on both the slide mount and the doily, but they look almost black in the scan. I even added some mint paint to the background of page 4 before I sewed anything to it.

When I saw Kristin's example, aside for the fact it made my mouth water, I thought it looked more turquoise than green. So that's why I chose colors that bordered on blue, as well as green. I really enjoyed this challenge and am looking forward to the next one. Thanks for offering this challenge, Kristin, and thanks for allowing me to play.

The colors you chose are perfect. I really like the second photo which to me has a rather abstract feeling.

Glad you are back on blogger.

Okay, I wrote this nice chatty comment, came back to add something and it's gone. Sheesh. I don't know what's up with your ongoing blogger problems - I rarely have any issues at all. I know how frustrating it is when computer stuff doesn't work - wonder if it's connected to your provider or Kansas or what? Here's hoping you can stay online for awhile! I love your minty folded booklet - it's such a great exercise in color, composition, techniques and even stitching (still haven't got my sewing machine out to try it). Very cool project.

Hi Elizabeth, thank-you so much for taking the time to visit my AB pages, I really appreciate your kind comments and encouragement. Isn't blogger playing you up my lovely!! It may be worth you trying google chrome (free to load as far as I know?), I had to change over as the other browser I was using no longer supported the blogger because of it's recent updates and most of my friends on blogger have had to do the same thing.
Tee hee, in answer to your question ref acrylic ink, it is something I stumbled on during some research into the gorgeous ink sprays on the market(e.g. dylusions, ranger, inkadinkadoo). I wanted to see if there was something more cost effective I could use to make up my own sprays as and when I needed them. The acrylic inks are an acrylic based, pigmented, water resistant ink and come in 30ml ish bottles with a dropper top. Companies such as Liquitex, Daler Rowney and Pebeo make them. Granted they are probably not as vivid as the dye based ink sprays you can get but they are less likely to fade over time.
Hope this helps?
Hugs

OMG! How useless am I!! I meant to start my comment by saying how gorgeous I thought your mint choc chip pages were. I love the freedom you express through your art and can only aspire to such myself, one day hopefully I will be able to truly let go and find some sense of my own style.
Hugs again x

Love that mint colour... it makes me hungry!! (OK... the banana bread in the oven that smells delish is also making my tummy growl like a brown bear)!!
I had no idea I didn't allow anonymous comments... now I will have to investigate and see if I can rectify the situation... I may be a while!!

Have to say you have embraced and nailed mint choc chip... these pages are just perfect, and I love the vintage feel of them... we used to get lots of things wrapped in a butcher's paper that was that shade of green, so I am now thinking of visits to the greengrocer with my Nan and armfuls of flowers wrapped in that soft green paper... wonderful memories brought on from a gorgeous set of pages...xx

Love your booklet! I actually saw this post while I was still away on one of the rare days we had a minute and free wi-fi at the same time!

This looks like such a fun challenge, and I hope to keep it in mind if she runs it next summer!
