Trash pick up challenge

This trash is for a challenge on ABC. We are supposed to pick up trash we see and make art from it. Yesterday my friend Joseph and I were out and about, all over the LA area doing tourist-y things, and this is what I found. Click on the picture for a better view.

We began our day at a gas station, where I found the blue plastic circle and explained the challenge to Joe. There were lots of trash in the gas station lot, but most of them were too dirty or oily to even pick up. I decided to pass, hoping I'd find something cleaner along the way.

The gas station was right next to "Hugo's," a high end restaurant that sells loose teas. Joseph bought a hot tea and some loose leaf white tea, for me. While there, I found one of their business cards crumpled and tossed away in the parking lot. I felt like we were off to a good start and it wasn't even 10 am!!

Next it was on to the Getty Museum. That turned into a greater challenge, since the museum employs lots of people who have nothing better to do than walk around with brooms and dustpans in their hands. However, I did manage to find the hook and bobby pin in the restroom and a receipt from the cafe. I felt confident no one would believe it was ours, since neither of us would order a meatball sandwich or a soft drink :>)

While walking thru the Getty, Joseph and I stopped to admire one of the gabillion walls of
travertine. He reached over and handed me a tiny piece that broke off in his hand when he was inspecting one of the tiles. What a score. I now own a tiny piece of the Getty!!! It's the white pebble next to the blue plastic circle.

On our way to Santa Monica, he had several calls, so pulled into a parking lot of a strip mall. I got out and walked the lot while he was taking calls. The rest of the stuff, with the exception of the hair band (black circle) came from that strip mall lot in I think, Burbank.

After a trip to Santa Monica, then on to Malibu and a glorious sunset, we came back thru Topanga Canyon, one of the most beautiful roads in the country. From there we stopped at a Whole Foods in Woodland Hills, where I found the hair tie in an otherwise pristine parking lot.

It's all junk, but I'll play with these treasures when I get home. Why is it altered artists can get excited about a find like this? I guess because it's free art supplies.
