Today I have a plea, a request for those of you who live in the states.
Marjorie Taylor Greene and our president want to defund PBS and NPR. They cite the political reason is that PBS features only leftist or liberal programs. Many Republicans seem to agree.
When I cut the cable a little over a year ago, the only TV station I cared about receiving was PBS. I know there are other channels, but I wasn't interested in them. I find PBS has all the shows I ever care to watch.
PBS is definitely a gift I give to myself. Where else will I find programs like Nature, or Nova, or Antiques Roadshow? I would be here all day if I mentioned all the incredible Ken Burns documentaries. I also like This Old House and Ask This Old House. There's also Cook's Country and its sister show, America's Test Kitchen. Lots of people watched both those cooking shows during the lock down.
Although I support PBS Kansas, all PBS stations are in peril. I support all of the British programs (and in return, I get a "free" lb of coffee each month). For those of you like me who have cut the cable, you might be subscribing to a few streaming services, including Netflix and Hulu, or even Disney +. Be aware, you pay a monthly fee for these, while I pay once for Passport, PBS's streaming service. Full disclosure, Passport is included with my British shows bundle. However, with Passport, you pay a one time annual donation, which is tax deductible to the full extent of the law. You can't say the same for the other streaming services.
My plea is to e-mail or call your federal and state senators and representatives. Tell your story and what makes PBS so important to you.

I hope these services don't get defunded, as you say many people rely on these instead of paying a monthly fee for other streaming services.
I don't know how anyone who actually watches PBS or listens to NPR say they are only liberal. I don't think cutting these makes the US more conservative but shows how small minded some people are.
The Republicans are the first to cry “we deserve free speech” but, they are so willing to stifle PBS because they don’t like what it said about the Republicans. This is beyond horrible but, here in Canada, Monday will be an election and I pray that Pierre Poilievre does not become our new Prime Minister. He is very much, just like Trump and has vowed to shut down the CBC, a Canadian channel that has shown many great shows and produced so much intellectual wealth. It would be a crime to stifle this channel.
...PBS is a national treasure and MAGA is a national disaster. .
I hope PBS can survive.
Thanks for posting on PBS -- something near and dear to my heart after 32 years of working for a PBS affiliate. And believe me, in both PBS and NPR, the stations do all they can to be unbiased with programs reflecting all sides, all races, genders, political parties -- not to mention the array of arts, science, childrens and history programs. I encourage everyone who loves PBS to reach out to their elected officials to help keep both the current PBS appropriation and to keep it in the upcoming budget.
You can pay monthly for PBS. I do. My very favorite are all of the Masterpiece Theater productions and Ken Burns documentaries! :)
