At the Beach

It's HOT.  In fact, it's so hot, I think we should head to the beach.  After all, Erika, who many of you know as Bio Art Gal's theme this month at Art Journal Journey is When It's Hot.

Yes, we're heading to the beach.

You may have a hard time recognizing these outfits as swimwear.  In the mid to late 1800s, the swimsuits more closely resembled a belted dress over bloomers. While they weren’t aesthetically appealing, the swimwear fulfilled its primary purpose, which was to conceal a woman’s body.  Back in those days, women concealed their bodies so as to be “modest.”  For that reason, the top portion of the swimsuit hung low like a dress to hide the woman’s figure.

For this page, I began by printing an image I found on the internet onto 110 lb card stock.  I then gave a light wash of color over the unprinted part of the page using a blue water soluble crayon.  I computer generated the words, colored them using a darker water soluble crayon, then sewed the cut words to the page.

Bleubeard and I are so happy you stopped by today, and we also hope to see you at Art Journal Journey.

As an aside, this is what I got when ATT tried to get me back online last Saturday:

Thankfully, I still had access to my computer and was able to download this photo I took of my monitor.  You can see the connection was down, although the DSL and Ethernet were working properly.

those bathing costumes don't do a lot to cool you down I think! Fun page. glad you got back online somehow!

Well, these are swim suits to consider. I´m allergic to the sun, plus, when Hubby took me for bathing to the FKK (nude) beach I really was afraid to run into my team-leader, who is from former GDR where this was very, very popular.
Phew, I was LUCKY! I had two more male colleagues from there and none showed up. This summer I am tempted to make some snow art... If it wasn´t for Corinna I might take your offer and come over to enjoy your hot weather indeed!
Your internet really cracks me up.
What if your whole business depended on it??? Your only way to work, to earn your living? Would they pay???

I bet when you got wet these outfits weighed a lot. And I wonder how many women knew how to swim in those days? I am curious about that. I guess these outfits don’t appeal much to me even though I dress fairly modest. But I do like your page and I do think those outfits make great art material. Glad also your internet returned also. You must get frustrated when that happens. But you are back and that is good! Happy Wednesday. Hugs Erika

I think when they went in the water those bathing beauties would have used a "bathing machine." It hid them when they were wet. I don't know too much about them. My ninth-grade latin brain says O tempora! O mores!

Nice art piece!

be well... mae at maefood.blogspot.com

It's crazy to see the difference now ~ the last time we went to a resort a women had on a thong bottom poolside with young children around! No modesty happening there ~ Great page ~ Stay cool, keep resting your eyes & heal quickly!

Well, first off, I love this piece. I'm glad I don't have to swim in those, too. It would cut my distance and endurance tremendously.

You have had a miserable time with internet. I'm glad things seem to be back, but good grief -- it shouldn't be this hard! Glad to see you can post!

Welcome back!
Going to the beach--with social distancing of course--sounds purrfect today.

I think you will guess that love those bathing belles and the costumes they are wearing. No wonder they needed bathing huts close to the water for changing and drying. It must have felt quite weighty when they were wet. Its a fabulous page and inspiration for the AJJ theme.
Its good that you got back on line, you must get so annoyed at all the disruption you get.
Stay safe.

Can you imagine wearing those swimsuits and how uncomfortable they must have been--LOL! Glad your internet was fixed, but hpe you don't have to pay for that long down time.

Love the costumes they used to wear but I bet they got quite heavy when they got wet. Mind you with the state of my legs with veins and things I could do with something like that to be in fashion nowadays. Lovely rendition of the beach scene.
Hugs to you and Bleubeard has tickles sent

Yes, times certainly have changed. I can't imagine wearing those constrictive heavy clothes for swimming. Neither can I imagine wearing some of the skimp things you see on beaches ttoday. Lovely beach scene. Hugs, Eileen

Love the vintage image! Bathing costumes- a good term. All I can think is clammy and heavy.

A fabulous page Elizabeth! I'm not one for going in the sea to swim but I wonder how they ever did in those outfits! Your internet really does behave badly doesn't it? We lost our connection the other day just before we were due to FaceTime our friends in Poitiers(it's become a weekly event!) so we started by phone -it came back and then we just got a fuzzy pic and heard their voices only! Technology huh!! Hugs, Chrisx
