Friday Smiles 328: playing home ec teacher

Once again, I'm joining Annie (at A Stitch in Time) and the ladies at Friday Smiles. This week I feel like I'm playing a home ec teacher.

On one of the days the youngsters were here, we were out and about and near the sewing center that carries my type of sewing machine.  I wanted to see if there was a part for my sewing machine I could buy that would allow my feed dogs to drop, so I can do free motion sewing, something I really want to do.  It seems I need a plate and a foot, both of which I decided to order.  However, I didn't have my book with me, which had the model number that would ensure the proper parts for my machine.

There was a big sign on the door that all cotton and poly cotton thread was 50% off.  Granted, JoAnn's sells 50% off thread often, but their variegated thread is quite limited.  Here, I was a kid in a candy store.  What I didn't realize was the middle sibling is interested in sewing.  Imagine my surprise when the child helped me pick out these incredible spools of variegated threads.

I don't have the tools to allow this child to create to a full potential.  I use my guillotine cutter when I can't tear fabric, so I may need to buy one of those cutting tools to cut both shapes and designs.  After rummaging through the fabric I have, the middle child was set and ready to start creating a sewn masterpiece.

The other two siblings wanted to cook.  Goodness, I'm a lousy baker.  However, I have all the ingredients needed for quiche.  I almost expected Ted Allen (the host of an American cooking show called "Chopped."  Think Mary Berry judging children bakers) to show up and wave the coveted Chopped Jr. chef's jacket to the winner.

I can't wait to see who is more proud of their skills, the sewing sibling, the crust making sibling, or the quiche filling sibling.  I know I'm the lucky one in all this.  All I have to do is eat and wash dishes.  Even the sewing sibling cleaned up the sewing machine area.  Have I not mentioned these are also very tidy youngsters?

Who needs funnies when you have home ec lessons!  Let's find out what others are smiling about this Friday.  Please don't forget to start your weekend off right by visiting Annie for a few Friday Smiles.  We would love to have you join us, too.

As a late entry, I'm joining Try it on Tuesday's fortnightly theme, Colors of the Rainbow.  For those of you who participate in T Stands For Tuesday, I have contacted Inlinkz and they have now assured me I can use my e-mail address I've always used with Inlinkz AND they have registered it with this blog.  Just to make sure, I quickly made this tag to see if it was true.  I don't expect anyone to visit because of this tag, I just want to be sure I can use Inlinkz with this blog on Tuesday of next week for our 6th Anniversary Party.  Try it on Tuesday is the only blog I know that still uses Inlinkz.  You might say this is a test!

I call my tag "Rock on!"

Thanks for allowing me to test Inlinkz at Try it on Tuesday.  Be sure to join them there, because they have fabulous themes and challenges.  I'm a proud supporter, too!

UPDATE: Inlinkz worked as promised.

Thanks for making and sharing that tag with us at Try It On Tuesday. It is an amazing idea and came out great! And this sounds like a fun tie to me. Oh those threads are beautiful. I get all drooly over variegated threads too. So I get your excitement. And I hope we get to see the quiche. Sounds like the kids are really interesting and like trying things. That would make nice visitors. Happy Friday. Hugs-Erika

Well, that sure made me smile today. It always thrills me to see/hear of young ones creating in any medium...sewing or cooking included. Well done to all three. Thanks for sharing.
Hugs,

I'm glad you had a nice shopping outing with the young ones. Nice to find one of them is interested in sewing. The quiche sounded delicious. Your artwork is lovely: great use of the rocking horse stamp again.

Oh the kiddos are having fun! That in itself is a big smile (if not two or more). I hope you will give us an update as to what they created. Or have you eaten it all without taking a picture? And to have one of them like sewing is also a pleasant surprise.
Another big smile is the fact that your Inlinkz works now. After all that! I bet you did a happy dance.
Have a great weekend,
Keep smiling,
Lisca

Sounds like the kidlets are having a good time whether in the craft room or kitchen. Even better that they are tidy. My Eldest liked to cook and I always liked having a meal prepared for me, even if I had to wash every pot, pan, dish, and spoon in the kitchen. As your colorful tag says, Rock On!

How nice the children's interests run in the direction of home arts- and they are tidy in the process! Win win!

Hi Elizabeth, I'm so proud of your little tribe they have obviously had some good education in the arts of sewing and cooking and despite what some educationalists think people still do enjoy these skills and can also make a living from them but it just seems that in the UK a lot of schools think these are outmoded subjects and have taken them off the curriculum. Hope you have a great weekend, Angela xXx

I love that your gang is into doing things -- cooking and sewing and doing things together is so cool. Good for them and good for you! They are more lucky than they know to have you in their lives at this important time.

Such fun! Sewing sounds like a good common interest y'all can share about even in your long distance contacts. And I'd love to know what quiche recipe they used. I'll bet it was delicious :)

How lovely to have youngsters around who want to sew and cook and not just fiddle with phones.
The threads are beautiful, and who can resist a bargain!
Enjoy the rest of your time with them. they sound like the perfect house guests. Kate x

How lovely that the 3 kids have some skills and are using them around the house.
Those cotton threads are very pretty.

I like the colours of the thread especially the glittery blue one( no kidding). I’m glad you were a teacher to something they no longer teach in school and should. I can’t sew worth beans but at least I can cook and bake. I love your rock on piece with the pun intended. The rainbow is great

The young ones do sound really good company and you are collecting memories for them to look back on in the coming years. t is a beautiful rsinbow tag and I love how you added the rocking horses.

What fun you have all been having! Those threads do look fabulous - good choice! I hope the quiche turned out well - I haven't made one since I was at college! The cookery teacher I took over from said she never made them because to make a flavoured quiche took so many ingredients and you can't beat an M and S quiche anyway!! I have to say I do still agree with her! I love your Rock On tag although the title reminds me of a certain British comedy duo! Thank you so much for joining us at Try It On Tuesday! Chrisx

I'm very late with my comments, but I do love the rainbow tag and that's a lovely rocking horse image.
You sound as if you're having fun with the young ones, isn't it nice when they like doing activities rather than sitting glued to an iPad and how nice that one shares your love of sewing. The threads you bought are lovely and will be so nice to use, I used to do a lot of machine embroidery when my daughter was young, think I might be a bit rusty now!
Glad you were able to link up to us at Try it on Tuesday.
