Second Thursday Tutorial: It's Bunny Time

Today I'm going to recycle an Easter project.  The good news is, when Easter is over, the bunny can go in my compost pile.

The materials I used were (from left to right):
Stapler and staples
Ink pen (you could use a pencil)
Scissors for cutting paper
Several newspapers
Bunny gelatin mold (if you are artistic, you can draw your own bunny)

Place the mold on a spot on the paper that is visually appealing.  If you are drawing the bunny, don't make it too complicated.

Draw around the mold or draw your bunny on the newspaper.

Cut two "identical" bunnies.

Save the second one for the back of the bunny and get ready to have some fun with the front.   Be sure to save the extra paper you cut away.  You will need it later.

These are my favorite highlighters from my office.   They have both a broad and a fine tip.  However, it's been so long since I used them, I wasn't sure that they still had ink in them.  I do more art and less office work these days.

To make sure I had enough highlighters, I grabbed two more pink ones.  I couldn't find another yellow one.  However, I also brought out a black Sharpie.   You might choose to paint your bunny, or use highlighters other than the colors I'm using.

I used the mold as a guide or model.

The first thing I did was add pink color to the ears.

Next I gave him eyes and a head.

Next came arms and fingers.  You see why I don't try to draw!

His bow tie and vest were next, along with some embellishments on the cuffs.

I seriously believe a five year old could draw better than I,

but here is my now clothed bunny.

Next came his nose and mouth.

At Bleubeard's insistence, I gave him whiskers, too.

Now it's time put the two bunny sides together.

I decided to staple the two pieces together, rather than sew the delicate newspaper pieces.

Use the paper you cut away from the bunnies to stuff the ears, then stuff the rest of the bunny with extra newspaper.    Once he is stuffed to your liking, it's time to finish stapling your bunny together.

I did a good job stuffing the ears, but the face is lacking, I fear.

He doesn't look much like the model, does he?

However, once you put him in your Easter basket,

he takes on a certain childish charm.  BTW, I showed how to cover those horrible plastic eggs with napkins a couple of years ago.

Thanks for joining me for my monthly tutorial.  Today is Day 13 of 22 leading up to bEARTHday.  When this post goes live, you'll be able to access it again on my Tutorials page under Recycling newspapers into an "art" project.  Again, I appreciate your visit and sticking with me through my recent blogger meltdown.

That bunny is cute and perfect for an Easter basket since its all about play. There's a whimsical charm about him. And the best part-its great recycling! And biodegradable after the holiday is over! Where do you come up with all these ideas? They are very cool ideas for sure. I just love those coasters in your post yesterday that I asked about-how fun! Hope its a great day. Hugs-Erika

What a charming idea. If there are little people about this would be a great activity to keep them from underfoot.

Hah this is really cute Elizabeth! When I learned to sew as a kid, they used to sell frantic that made flat stuffed animals (printed with a front and a back so you just cut them out and sewed them together). This reminded me of that. :)

This kind of project is what separates truly creative folks like you from the imitative. How clever!
