Friday Smiles 76: appropriate number for Independence Day

Today I'm sharing a smile with Annie at A Stitch in Time for Friday Smiles.  76 is rather appropriate, since it's the year of the US's independence, 1776, that is.

My patriotism is showing as I show how the flag has changed through the years, as the prices have constantly increased on these postage stamps.

Of course. if the index card doesn't make you smile, perhaps our national bird will!  The bald eagle, found only in North America, was originally on the endangered and threatened list until 2007, but because of reduction in pesticides and fluorocarbons, nesting pairs of these birds have now increased over 10-fold, from less than 450 in the early 1960s to more than 4500 adult nesting pairs in the 1990s.  And even if you don't live in North America (primarily Alaska, British Columbia, and the western US), this majestic bird and these increased numbers should bring a smile to your face.

Have a safe and happy weekend, whether you're celebrating with fireworks in the US, or just enjoying a bit of time off.  And please don't forget to smile along with Annie and the other Friday Smiles participants.  And let Annie know how lucky she is to have that new customer who is going to sell her a nearly new sewing machine.  I'd be smiling at that one!!

Thanks for popping by and linking up again this week. It's so lovely to share traditions and lives from all over the world and yours always makes me smile. Have a great day of celebrations.
I'm handing over the cheque for my machine today so am really excited :-) this guy was certainly sent to me for a reason.

Great stamp art, Elizabeth. You would be surprised at the huge population of bald eagles I have in my area of FL! Happy 4th to you and Bleubeard! The Girls are hiding in the closet coz they don't like the fireworks. :)

As a "former" stamp collector, I enjoyed seeing the flags through the years. We went to a rapter rehabilitation center when we were in Alaska and got to see this gorgeous eagle close up. Huge and a little scary, but amazing. We did see several in the wild, too.

I collected stamps as a child and really enjoyed your display of them. I am now just showing my DD as she still collects stamps. But your bird is just beautiful so pleased to hear his numbers have been increasing and yes that does bring a smile to my face, thankyou.

Elizabeth - I LOVE the stamps on your index card. I really have a "thing" for postage stamps and enjoyed seeing the different versions of the flag. Your eagle card is great too and thanks for the lesson in conservation. I knew there was an effort to preserve these beautiful birds but I wasn't aware of how successful it had been to date. I love the stitching on this piece and your composition is flawless.

Hope you have had a great day! Love your icad! The eagle definitely made me smile - it reminded me of when I was a special needs teacher and we used to visit a bird if prey centre that had a pair of bald eagles. Such lovely birds - I seem to remember they were quite young and a little bit naughty - much to the delight of the children! Have a lovely weekend! Chrisx

The flags are making me smile, and I saw my first close up Bald Eagle this summer, what an amazing bird. He swooped down to the pond and grabbed some food. xox

Loving the stamps and the eagle.

Thanks for your comment on my garden and reminding me I haven't done my monthly photo. Gosh I am seriously losing it these days. Will have to get that sorted today. As for the brother, I'm afraid he went to live in heaven many years ago, long before I even met my husband. The hedge my husband was trimming is in the front garden and is all that separates us from the road (street). The metal door on the first photo is to the sunken garage and you also get to see the base of the mega Magnolia tree. Glad you like. BJ

Hello and Happy 4th of July weekend! I missed a lot here and read thru it all and am now caught up, YAY!!

First, LOVE seeing these stamps! Great info on the Bald Eagle too, didn't know any of this. My dad collected them and has run out of room so now his living room is full of them and it's like they are watching you, lol.

Great 4th of July page below, YAY!! I love this holiday and the colors too, my favorite combo.

WOW, your icads are so cool and how awesome to see all 30 together. Way to go on keeping up, it feels good doesn't. I'm going strong on mine too.

SOOOOO happy to see your cutting post, LOVE LOVE seeing your yard and TOMATOES!!! YAY!! So happy they are growing nicely for you. Ours are doing good too along with the rest of the garden. You could make a all green mandala with all this you know, would be so pretty.

I just posted my SOC art for this week. The colors were so pretty.

Have a happy and safe weekend my friend and see you again on Tuesday.

Happy 5th of July! Some days I wonder where my mind is, Elizabeth...I seem to have torn up your envelope and address in making a collage for my ATC album. :( Would you kindly send me your address? Baby finally finished her ATC and I need to send to Bleubeard.

Hi Elizabeth, when you say, old established part of town, who old exactly? Our house was built in 1927 but we saw the deeds to the land back to 1899. The semi's next to us are slightly older as slightly more ornate.
Anyway, yes I have had trouble with the J52 site in the past, bet it is when it is being updated. I get the email updates each week (although can't access my laptop again today so am using my hubby's PC!) Anyway I can access it now and the prompt is Week 27: Nostalgia. BJ

Oh Elizabeth it IS Birds on a WIRE but someone else did a bird on a post as they didn't have any wires so I just joined in. Will be looking out for a wire one though. My laptop has died so I am using my tablet which can be a little difficult to write much. BJ

Oh and still looking out for a pretty lamp post..... Maybe you call them steel lights.
