Friday Smiles 53: Twenty and OH!!

I wasn't sure I had much to smile about today, because I'm having a devil of a time loading any photos in Blogger.  In fact, Blogger didn't even want me on their site for nearly a day.  I hope others aren't having the troubles I am with it.  I have no problems with the other blog sites, just blogger.  I even considered sharing my Week 3 of Journal 52, which is You Make Me Smile.  But I don't think others want to see another Friday with Bleubeard as the main attraction, although I'm sure he would appreciate the added compliments he gets each time he joins the conversation.  Unfortunately, it sort of goes against a rule I try to enforce, where I don't like to share challenges or weekly blog hops in the same post.

However, as I was about to give up, I looked around and decided this week was ALL ABOUT the numbers.  After all, we have just come off a full year (yep, 52 weeks) of Friday Smiles hosted by Annie at A Stitch in Time, so I thought I would share another set of numbers and maybe garner a smile or two when I finished this rather long winded post!

Now many of you who have followed my blog for several years know I'm a HUGE basketball fan.  OK, truth be told, I'm a Laker's fan.  For those of you who don't live in the US, it's a professional team in the western conference that is doing really poorly this year and has for the past two seasons, ever since their last head coach retired.

Those who know me well, know I don't follow college basketball, and couldn't name anyone or any team or league or standing.  However, that didn't bother my friend Kathy who gave me this lovely note pad and cover at Christmas.  You see, it's my final alma mater.

Allow me to digress for just a moment.  My high school was Lyons, KS and the mascot was LIONS.  My undergrad degree came from Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO, whose mascot was also LIONS.  My master's degree came from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS, whose mascot was a GORILLA.  All very intimidating mascots.  My Ph.D. came from Wichita State University (WSU) whose mascot is

a shock of wheat!!  Now if that doesn't make you laugh out loud, I don't know what will.  Who in the world is afraid of a little wheat?  Even if it is a shock of wheat.  And believe it or not, that's where the name "Shockers" comes from.

BTW, they are now possibly the best college basketball team in the NATION, with a ranking of 20 and OH (20-0)!!

What was your school's mascot?  Was it something appropriate, or something that made you laugh?  Don't forget to visit Annie for links to others who share their Friday Smiles.

Schools here don't have mascots - well mine didn't..... Hope you get on better with blogger - apparently they had some kind of upgrade this month and it's caused problems for some people and not others, so that may be why you're suffering! I've heard of people who can't get on their dashboard at all... so keep going!!

Yes I'm laughing Elizabeth :-) we didn't gave a mascot but we did have a motto...It was in Latin 'haud pro una sed pro multis' (I think that was how it was spelt)and it's meaning was 'not for one but for many'.....trust me when I say there were many that lived by that motto :-) It always made us laugh :-)
Hugs,
Annie x

Happy Friday!! I love hearing your stories and learning something new about you. I had no idea you loved basketball. This image made me laugh too!
My schools mascot was a pirate and my kids mascot right now is a streak. I think the pirate was pretty normal but the poor streak is not.

I'm glad blogger finally let you post, mine still won't let me.
Read your post below and love it, what a great job on the drawing. The colors are beautiful!

Hope you are staying warm enough, it's getting cold again. We also got some snow yesterday, it's all pretty and white now.
Have a good weekend, hugs!

Basketball? Hmmm. Here in australia we have football, which is based on a gaelic game, although most people don't remember that. I don't really follow any sports, because it all seems about the money instead of the game. But you seem to love this, so it must be good, lol. sorry about your hand sewing problems, but I hope you still enjoyed looking

I know very little about basketball though one of my sons was in the county team for a while, but your post still made me smile.
I don't recall my schools having a mascot, but our sons primary had a phoenix rising from the flames because the whole school was burned down, just a few years before they went to it. Kate x

Grr to Blogger. I know that feeling well myself this week.
Now a Shock of Wheat. Never heard that phrase!
Our school mascot was a weird adult and child thing just looked like two swoops of a brush. My school badge is on a layout I did many years ago. Not exciting like yours.
Hugs

Well, that made me laugh today! Maybe it is what came out of the wheat that they need to be afraid of!

My HS mascot was a tiger and my college mascot a Viking.

HAHAHAHA...yes, that scary shock of wheat.
Much like my High School mascot. A skipper. ooo scary boat captain.

My elementary had a mascot as well...a Pegasus. Truly frightening.
And lest we forget my kids mascot...a storm. Seriously. It's an angry looking cloud holding a lightening bolt.

ROTFLOL! THAT is funny!
My grade school was a wildcat
High school was a driller, symbol is a man in bib overalls and a metal hat: like a man form the oil fields.
college was a renegade. the symbol is a knight with a shield.

Thanks for the chuckle this morning!

We didn't have a school mascot but we did have a motto which went through change. It started as "Nihil Quam Optime", which was supposed to say "Nothing but the Best". Then someone realised that it actually meant "Nothing as well as possible". Ooops! So it was changed to "Nil nisi optime". You have to understand that it was the Latin teacher who got it wrong to start with, and it had been incorporated into all the uniforms and into the school song. Not easy or cheap to put it all right. xx Maggie

Hi Elizabeth, had a bit of a problem with blogger earlier ... I couldn't get on at all for an hour or so ... but it seems to be okay now. I don't recall my school or either of the two colleges, or even the university I attended, University of Manchester, having a mascot ... I don't think we do mascots in the UK. Even Wellesley College, MA, where I studied for a while rather unusually doesn't have a mascot. Your Shocker is kind of cute though :) Elizabeth xx

That sure is a fun mascot and it does put a smile on my face...
I guess the wheat might only strike fear in those that are gluten free heehee ;)
What a pain when things aren't working well...hope Blogger behaves and that you have a really nice weekend E.
