Friday Smiles: Bleubeard's "expensive" cat scratcher

I realize I have a lot of reasons to smile this week, but this was an impromptu photo that really made me smile earlier tonight.   In case this is your first time visiting, Annie at A Stitch in Time holds a weekly smile, which I have come to love.  It's a great way to end the week, and start the weekend.

Why am I smiling at Bleubeard?  Of all the fancy cat toys and goodies this cat has, he still prefers an old box laid on the floor for his scratching post.  I hope you can see this is a well used scratched box, too. By the way, when the box gets too well worn (and torn to shreds), it goes to my veggie garden and sits under a planter.  Nothing is ever wasted at my house.

Now go smile with someone, even if it's your cat, and visit Annie for even more Friday Smiles.

Brilliant. I always say children are like that...with all their expensive toys they still prefer to play with the boxes. :-)

Mind you, he looks as if he's thinking about that lovely rug! You are just like me as I never waste anything and my grandees had a super time last week with the box from my new fridge. I even save the fluff when I use the tumble dryer, for the birds to use in their nests.

It does look like a well used scratch pad... typically, like children, they would prefer to play with the packaging... Tom-Tom loves brown paper bags... he runs and dives into them.

Bleubeard is making good use of that cardboard and you will make good use of it when he is done.

Bluebeard is beautiful, and very wise too, to keep his claws off the furniture. My cat is always one of the best smile-makers in this house. Kate x

I just love your cat! He up-cycles/recycles just like all of us crafters. Thanks for the smile. Caro x (#8)

Bleubeard is quite a guy...was hoping you weren't going to tell us that he liked scratching your pretty rug!

Amazing how much cats enjoy boxes to play in too ... no need for fancy cat villas that they sell ;)

Happy last August weekend to you E

So cute! I am smiling. :)
Reminds me a bit of my old cat, Shadow, who had a special box that she liked to sit in.

Just like a child who gets the most pleasure out of the simplest of things.

I love the fact that once the box is scratched to spreads you still find another use for it

That definitely caused me to smile, Elizabeth. Bonnie loves cardboard boxes too, she likes to hide in them, but her preferred scratching posts, she has several, are all naughty ones, e.g. the arm of the sofa, the back of the armchair, the carpet in the bedroom. I've tried everything to dissuade her but she tells me you can't teach an old cat new tricks :)) Elizabeth xx

That's just part of the perversity of cats: When my elder cat was a kitten, her favorite past time was batting a little foam ball around inside a paper bag. The cat would occupy herself with it for two hours, I kid you not. My younger cat's favorite was a cardboard box, too, but not for scratching. She'd get inside it, turn upside down, and shred the flap with her teeth. So much for the kitty toys.

Well, I love cats and Bluebeard made me smile, as my darling feline, Daisy, always does me. Thank you so much for your lovely and helpful comments. The scissors - really helpful! I read a beautiful book called 'Snow Falling on Cedars' about the Japanese Americans. All nations have a history of doing awful things not necessarily because they see groups as 'other' but partly because they fear they might be human - just like them, although they believe something different or look different. Britain has done things for which it should be ashamed too. We must confront this and try to learn and communicate both with our shadow selves and those peoples we tell ourselves are 'not like us'. I pray we will - as Auden said, 'We must love one another or die...' Sorry that's grim! I'll finish by saying all human beings tend to smile at the same wonderful things! Laughter unites us and destroys dictators! Julie Ann xxx

Brilliant, he love a scratch and anything that makes him happy, I suppose you too, because if this box wan't there your furniture would be a big target LOL

He is a beautiful boy, give him a hug from Yoda and I.

That's awesome...love that he just scratches away on a flattened box. What a guy!
Had to tell you...Gracie let herself out today. We assume claws into the screen and slid the patio screen enough to escape. Thank goodness she came when I called for her. Nice that she thinks she's a dog. ;)
