Ode to a dying breed and eating in a new Mediterranean restaurant

I love this post office.  It is far better than the one where my mail actually comes from.  This one has friendly clerks and helpful friends.  But I fear this

post office is soon to be a thing of the past.  It doesn't get as much traffic as some other stations.  So I had to take a couple of pictures of this old station before it becomes a thing of the past.

BTW, some of you have asked for a photo of me.  Well, here I am in the reflection of the glass.  Yes, that's me on Thursday in baggy jeans and a parka-like top.  What was I thinking?  It was cold in my house, but not outside.  I soon removed the heavy outerwear.

I can see why the PO is going out of business.  I had a letter to mail that weighed less than 2 ozs.  It was going overseas.  I filled out a customs documentation and wrote "decorated fabric" in the box on the form.  After everything had been taken care of (because I already had the postage on the letter), I learned this small insignificant letter had to go as a PACKAGE because it was NOT paper or documents, but fabric.  Why should there be such a distinction between paper and fabric?  Next time I send a quiltlet or any decorated fabric, I'll enclose it in paper and write something like "decorated paper and ephemera."  Then it will HAVE to go as a letter, not a package/parcel.

After visiting the PO, Sally, my dear friend and neighbor, had to pick up some medication way out on the east side of town, so we decided to eat at a Mediterranean restaurant called M.I.F., which stood for Mediterranean and International Foods.  I forgot to take a photo of the outside of the restaurant when we went in.

I thought the mural, which took up one entire wall,

was quite indicative of the region.  I cropped the pictures so the people sitting in the booths would not get freaked.  Of course, right after we ordered, Sally remembered she wanted to be home in about a half hour to watch a basketball game on TV.  It was Kansas (KU) versus someone.  So we got our food to go, and said good bye to this lovely mural and new found eating establishment.

I hope your day was fantastic.  I sure enjoyed my Mediterranean meal.

showing your foot in the reflection may not be what someone had in mind as a photo of you Mz E LOL ...

HAHA...your foot and a snippet of body possible if you squint really hard. The pendant lights are the same ones I have over my sink in the kitchen.

the post office is complicated. ever have a money order go astray? the process can be almost byzantine to straighten that out. i need the post office, though. not often, but i do need it.

The PO has a lot of issues that would have put it out of business a long time ago had it been a private business.

I mailed a book the other day to a town about 45 miles north of me.

It went to Memphis (220 miles SW), then to St. Louis (280 miles north of Memphis and north west of the location) and finally to the town in KY. Took it 5 days to do that!

--SIGH--

you are such a tease with the photo of yourself! =) made me smile...fun photos of the restaurant too. makes me sad that post offices are closing, though. BTW, be on the look-out for a card from me! let's hope it doesn't get lost...

Well, you made me laugh! The whole photo thing is awful, and only since woywwers have started meeting up have I realised how much I hate being in photos! I have to say that you are a sweetie to Sally, I would've been so put out to miss the surroundings to match my meal. But you are a better person than me..we already know that! I love the mural in the restaurant..more on the north african oasis side of the Med i reckon. I'm a bit of a defender for the Poffice...i know its expensive, and as i use it less, the expense really 'shows up', but i still cant fathom an alternative, and would hate hate hate to lose the option!

I certainly agree with you...even though I don't mail internationally all that often--the recent jump in price is ridiculous! I like the cozy feeling murals give in a restaurant.

What?! That's my post office...literally down the road from us. I did not know it was closing! I am so shocked. And sad. The clerks are really nice there. What will happen to them? I am always amazed at how dated the building looks...it's like stepping back into the past in there.
