Inspiration Avenue: Icy

We've had 43 days of 100 degree F temperatures to date this year, and are headed for 44. I've been offline most of the week, because I was working in my basement and deep cleaning my house to prepare for an overnight guest, who has decided to stay through Friday.

Let me start by saying I'm not a big fan of abstract art. I love it when others make it, just not when I make it. Somehow, I feel it looks more like a background than a piece of art. So, I'm going to declare this is NOT a finished piece of art. But since I needed something for the Inspiration Avenue challenge this week, and since I couldn't let Lisa of The Wright Stuff down, and also since I was ready for a darker, more wintry palette, I went with

a 12" X 12" X 1" cut of wood and painted it the way I thought an icy abstract landscape would look.

I've scanned it here. Note the difference in the colors from the photo to the scan. I used White, Deep Blue, and Deep Purple (those probably aren't the real names but they are probably listed correctly on the Golden web site) fluid acrylics.

I am posting this a bit early this week, but will be unable to visit all the IA challenge blogs until Saturday or Sunday. So have a great weekend and I'll visit all my friends soon.

I think your abstract art is looking very swish.

Your painting looks stark and cool! I'm ready for some cooler temperatures, too. Or at least less humidity!

Okay, you're not a fan of abstracts, but I see a landscape, a window view, a sea view, a core view, and more. Love the scanned colors over the photo.
You done good!

I can't believe the difference in the scanned color vs the photo! That's just crazy.
Love the start you have on the piece, will be exciting to see what you do next.
I used to hate abstract art...thought "anyone could do it" I know better now. I've tried...with not really much success in my opinion.

amazing difference in photo and scan!
Love the colors...I have never quite gotten 'abstract' art...sometimes when I would read the "name" of a painting I would think "well OK, if you say so"

I think it's great you stepped up to the challenge E!
Enjoy your house guest!

Hi Elizabeth, love the look of this. I'm with a lot of people here not getting abstract art but I think the idea is that it can be whatever you want it to be; dunno really! Keep cool; think I'd have melted completely by now in that heat.

Well you didn't let me down :) - not that you had to worry about that anyway!!

I like the simplicity of this piece. It is cool and the colours rock.

Those colours are delicious - and the simple stark composition suits them well - most wintery!

I notice that I tend to change my palette according to the seasons, it's not really a conscious thing but I suppose the weather must influence us!

It's interesting how different the colors appear in the photo and the scan. However, I like the brilliance of the colors - Golden fluid acrylics are just beautiful. I think your abstract is very wintry.

very creative and courageous. i think that abstract art is quite revealing and almost vulnerable - there is nowhere for the artist to 'hide', no mask - pure honesty. and yours definitely says ICY. well done!

I LOVE this- you've captured that still, muffled feel of an early morning in the snow. I'm not sure what else you'd do to finish this- it looks done to me! Enjoy your company!

You definitely get across the cool and icy feeling with your abstract. Dark colors that make you think of snowy days. thanks for visiting my blog too! :-)

I think your abstract is great! I like abstracts, but I think they are not so easy to do. Love your color choices.

I like the way you can see the grain/texture of the wood through the paint - it makes a lovely effect along with the great choice of colours.

I've tried painting on blocks of wood but find it difficult to affordably source the wood. However, I found a couple of 6 x 6 blocks on the woodpile a few months ago and the kids created adorable art on them that I proudly display on the piano. I like the way blocks stand up and don't have to be hung.

Thanks for your comment on my blog today. My 100 followers seem small compared to your 406 massive following! I'm sorry about the prize draw & you not able to join in - I feel bad about it. Hope you're not upset. This was my first ever giveaway and was unsure how to go about it. I'm sure I'll do another and next time I'll make the entry different.

Kat :-) X
