Tea with Ian and a few words about President Zelensky

It's been a hard week with few things to smile about.  The bitter cold  has given us wind chills that peaked to -41 F (-40.6 C).  Further, my new scanner isn't working properly.   However, it's Friday, which means it's hopefully time to join Friday Smiles which is hosted by Annie (at A Stitch in Time). I'm not completely sure we will even have a Friday Smiles this week.  Let's suppose we will and visit Annie and the other wonderful ladies who also share their smiles each Friday.

I want to begin by talking about President Volodymyr Zelensky.  If you live in the states, you may have seen he visited Washington D.C. on Wednesday.

https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/YPmtUZUva_U5KpzhVfJTAg--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTcwNTtoPTQ3MDtjZj13ZWJw/https://media.zenfs.com/en/ap.org/117dd54283a54bfc459a2f408d13ab63 I didn't get to see his speech until about 2 a.m. Thursday morning when it was rebroadcast on a cable talk show.  I made a few notes as I watched his speech which he insisted had to be in English, even though English is not his first or second language, but his third

One of the phrases he used really struck me.  When he was thanking and praising the U.S., he mentioned the phrase bicameral and and bipartisan.   We are certainly bicameral, but we haven't been bipartisan for several years.

The other tidbit was probably discussed on every channel and that was the aid we are providing isn't charity, but an investment in both our countries' future.

https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/m.493Gk9E2EvK_32edEuOA--/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTcwNTtoPTQ3MDtjZj13ZWJw/https://media.zenfs.com/en/ap.org/a501822a9b4d78e550974568e342594d  I suspect this photo of Zelensky giving a Ukrainian flag that had been signed by soldiers currently fighting on the battle field to Congress made every news outlet too.  Finally, I was impressed that Zelensky said they would not lose the war.  I believe him and here's why.

Although the aid dates back to 2014, in 2019 Congress approved an aid package to the Ukrainians and the newly elected President of Ukraine (Zelensky) asked why the aid had not been sent.  Trump, president at the time said aid was on its way BUT, there was a quid pro quo, where Zelensky had to agree to investigating Joe Biden or the aid would be slow in coming, if at all.  Zelensky stood up to Trump, resulting in Trump's first impeachment.  Now Zelensky is standing up to another bully, Putin.  Zelensky might be small, but he has stood up to two of the biggest bullies in the world since he has taken office.  This is why I believe that the Ukrainians will NOT lose their war on freedom.  All images above were from Yahoo! News.

The other great thing that happened this week is I was one of a select group who had tea with Ian McNeice last Saturday.

Those of you who were here for T stands for Tuesday saw that my foodie friend Sally posed with Ian McNeice of Doc Martin fame.  McNeice plays the scheming plumber turned restaurant owner turned whiskey maker on the show.  Although he has been in numerous films and television shows, he was at PBS Kansas to help raise money for the station.

Per the PBS Kansas newsletter:

PBS Kansas Channel 8 hosted an afternoon with Ian McNeice, the English actor who plays Bert Large on Doc Martin. President & CEO Victor Hogstrom lead off the questions, then Mr. McNeice took questions from the audience. Our guests enjoyed light refreshments and were treated to hot tea from The Spice Merchant. Finally, Mr. McNeice took photos and autographed everyone’s tea cups!

A few shots from the day:

That's enough for this week.  Please join Bleubeard and me at Annie's  and because I want to share Ian's iconic face and hat, I'm also joining Nicole's Friday Face Off a second time this week.

Have a very Merry Christmas, if you celebrate it.

A difficult week but some definite highlights - thank you for sharing them.
And yes, we knew that Zelensky had visited your country and hope (fervently) that he does win the war.

AHA, you, also!
Ingo thinks I´m weird I take notes of TV-"shows" to share later on blogger. Nice to have company! :-)

I so hope they win this stupid war.

Yes, Zelensky stood up more than once. Klitschko, mayor of Kiev, was asked why they are so brave.
He said "The Russians"... fight for money, they fight for their children, their homes, FREEDOM. Also our freedom.
I really heard too many stories about how life was under socialism, I do not want that.

I liked your piece on Zelensky. I really admire him and all he is doing to hjold his country together at this difficult time.
Tea with Ian looks as though it was a very joyful affair. I haven't watched many episodes of Doc martin, but i certainly know Ian's face.
I can't even imaging the low temperatures you talk about. It sounds horrendous to me. I hope you have plenty of affordable heating, and not too many reasons to need to leave home.
I also hope your scanner is soon working as it should.
Stay safe my dear, and enjoy the season as best you can.
Sending warm hugs and wishes. Kate x

Same wind chills up here!
Zelensky has stood up to the two of the biggest bullies in the world. Helping them is an investment in the future of the world.
A visit with Ian looks like it had to be fun. :)

I watched the speech live, and I think Zelenskyy did a wonderful job with that speech. He was smart to come in also, as there (as you know) are those in congress that for some reason think it is OK for Putin to take over Ukraine. I don't get that, and other than the belief it is a lot more debt to take on in a time when our deficit is so high, the fate of the concept of democracy is really being tested. You can't be a democratic world leader nation and not help a country that is trying to fight aggression it did not start. I could go on, but with the wind whipping I'm going to try to hit some other blogs in case the power goes out. I hope you are able to stay warm and you have a wonderful Christmas and Christmas weekend my friend. I wish I could send some woodstove heat your way. hugs-Erika

Enjoyed the highlights of your week. Good read on Zelensky's visit. I admire him for his determination in the face of adversity.. I wish peace returns soon for the people of Ukraine.

I suspect Putin probably thought he would just walk into Ukraine and take it over just like that but the country were ready for him and I hope with all my heart that they succeed in keeping him out for all our sakes. Zelensky is a brave man who loves his country and has great determination. Hope they can find peace soon. Lucky you for meeting Ian McNeice too, we love him in Doc Martin. I was thinking about you when I saw the news about how cold it has been where you are and I hope you can stay warm and have a very happy Christmas. Hugs, Angela xXx

I have been impressed with Zelensky since he took office. All the creeps of the world underestimated him. I am ashamed at the right wing maga congress men and women who disrespected him in open theater. No surprise though, they disrespect everyone. I know Zelensky will take his people and country to victory. As for your photos with tea and Ian, they are such a joy and a memory you will keep. Thank you for joining FFO twice today. Stay warm.

Yes, I also saw Zelensky on tv. (I was staying at my sisters for a few days.) I admire the man. Yes, he stood up to bullies and good for him. Also good for us because if Russia takes over Ukraine, they won’t stop there. Europe will be next.
I bet you and Sally had a very special time having tea at the Kansas tv station. I don’t know the actor ( and I’ve not seen Doc Martin) but it’s not something you do every day. And therefore exiting.
I’m sorry I’m late (and haven’t posted myself). I’ve been traveling all day yesterday . Holland is not that far from Spain. Only 3and a half hour’s flying but somehow it takes all day.
Wishing you a very lovely Christmas,
Keep smiling,
Hugs

Well, as you already know, I'm slightly envious about your tea with Ian McNeice. What a treat. I'm so glad you got to do this and all the more, share it with us.

I so admire Zylynsky (whose name I never spell right.) He's a remarkable man and I hope they can continue to be supported and fight on.

I loved your comments about Zelensky. My husband and I both admire him so much. He has shown the world what real leadership is like - and Ukranians have shown the world what courage is. Even grandmothers in Ukraine who have lost nearly everything have said they will stand firm and that Ukraine will win. Putin has nothing like that to back him up, and he is a typical bully, which means a coward at heart. I firmly believe Ukraine will win.

On another note, I enjoyed your bit on Ian McNiece. When we were in Sacramento, we used to watch Doc Martin. PBS was one of our two favorite channels; the other was MSNBC for news.

I hope you had wonderful Christmas and wish you a Bom Ano Novo (Happy New Year) from Portugal .

I admire Zelensky, and I appreciated that he visited the USA. I remember the shame for America when Trump tried to blackmail him, dirt for arms. I fervently hope Ukraine wins its terrible war and that Putin is held accountable for his crimes against humanity. Thank you for this post, Elizabeth!
