Seeds of Hope

Today we start a new month, and that means a new host at Art Journal Journey.  This month we have the talented Tracey from Hotchpotchcreations.  Tracey has chosen an interesting theme, which is (sorry folks, but I live in the states and spell it a bit differently) My Favorite Color is October.

When I think of October, I think of apples, pumpkins, and leaves changing colors.  These are also the colors I associate with October.   Although I was tempted to use various colored leaves for my first post this month, I decided to go a different route.   Therefore, I chose the color of apples.  I'll gather some leaves later this month.

These apple seeds have been saved through the centuries here in the states.  Historical records indicate that apples were one of the first crops planted, cultivated, and harvested by colonists who brought seeds with them from England and western Europe.

There's a revival to keep these seeds alive for future generations.

I call them Seeds of Hope,

which is also the title to this post.

Seeds are carefully documented and stored

before planting some seeds that will hopefully grow into trees that produce these varieties that have been around since they came to the states with the colonists who settled Jamestown.
and require specific information on how to cultivate depending upon the variety and cultivar. Some of this information has been passed down

I chose the dye ink colors I used in the stencil from the apples I found in a horticulture article on saving these seeds.  Unfortunately, I didn't save the name of the magazine that contained the article.  I computer generated the words and colored them using watercolors.

Thank you ever so much for visiting today.  Tracey, Chris, Erika, Valerie, Yvonne, Bleubeard, and I are delighted you joined us and hope to see you this month at Art Journal Journey with your own take on My favorite color is October.

Love how you chose to use fruit Elizabeth, it's such an important time of the year to preserve seeds for the coming season. Beautiful images of the apple variation, whole and halved. The background looks like you've sliced an apple and printed with it, what a great match.
Happy creative October Tracey x

Beautiful and... uh-oh. I bought apples last week and never ate them.
"Seeds of Hope" is a great way to start the (darn) dark, cold half of the year.
The "vintage" writing adds some charm. Great background, too!

Fabulous page, Elizabeth, apples are always great in autumn especially. Love the idea of seeds of hope, investing in the future. Have a great day, hugs, Valerie

Our colours are different to yours at the moment - but Spring and Autumn/Fall are my favourites. And I love what you have done with the theme.

Apples are such great treats - I try to have them around always. I think of apples, pumpkis and fall colors when I think of October too (and spooky things of course). You have inspired me to make pumpkin squares (made with apples and bananas as well). Super direction to go on this new theme, Elizabeth! Love your colors and apples!!! Hugz

Two beautiful apples on a lovely background. I like your different take on the theme by using apples rather than leaves which would have been my choice.
You talking about seeds reminds me of a song we used to sing in the Girl Guides (Scouts I think for you) which was "Little Johnny Appleseed" It was about someone going wandering and sprinkling apple seeds wherever he went if memory serves me right. I can hum the tune, remember some words but not all of them. Now was he called Johnny Appleseed or England?
Hugs, Neet xx

Apples are perfect for October. I think fall fruits and veggies are my favorites. And apples are the best at this time of year also. Those are wonderful images too. I love your idea and how you created your page. Seeds of hope is another super word play. This is the perfect start, and happy new month my friend. Hugs-Erika

The Johnny Appleseed song became well-known when Disney used it in a movie about the American appleseed planter. His story seems legendary but he was absolutely real! Your apples are a great symptom of autumn.

"Anyone can count the seeds in an apple. But only God can count the apples in a seed." Lovely hopeful creations! Apples are so important and so wonderful!

I am lost without my daily apple (or often half a large one) we even managed to remember to take a plastic knife with us so that we could have apples in Paris. You can imagine how happy this page makes me - I love the background and so agree that old varieties of apple should be preserved. I look forward to Autumn for the short season apples that don't keep well - they are usually much tastier than common varieties that Winter well. Hugs, Chrisx

Fabulous page! The apple images are so beautiful and remind me that I need to pick those growing in my garden this month 😀. The background design matches the apples beautifully with circles and autumnal colours - perfect. Thanks for the inspiration and wishing you a Happy October! Hugs Jo x

A beautiful October page Elizabeth! We were picking apples on our walk this morning on the golf course, to make apple crumble for lunch. There's an old orchard up there, as it used to be part of a 'pick your own' farm.
Hope you have a good Sunday,
Alison

The apples are perfect "seeds of hope" -- I'm thinking of Johnny Appleseed and spreading seeds about. We all have seeds to share. A lovely piece, Elizabeth. I hope all's well for you!
