Two more spreads for Art Journal Journey

Today I have two more spreads for Art Journal Journey.  Both of these have an old school feel, one retro, one vintage.

Let's begin with the retro spread.

When I first started working on my Back to School book, I heard this statistic on a national news station.  I immediately wrote it down, because I could not believe how much sleep young children need.  I'm used to sleeping two to three hours, then being up for at least, 16, then sleep for two, then back at it again.

I can see our young lad has awakened refreshed and happy, greeting the day along with the singing bird.

This 11 to 12 hours sleep a night simply blows my mind.

However, the young boy seems to believe his mother and not put up a fuss when told to go to bed.

For this spread, I began by laying down a background of dictionary pages.  I then used an image from a child's book I had been given, which I turned into a tape transfer.  I was so lucky that the image came off nearly complete, so I was able to use the back side at the top of the page.  Text was computer generated on yellow copier/printer paper.

The second spread deals with

the one room schoolhouse.

I feel sorry for the teacher who has to handle all those children of different ages.  Did you notice the children in the tree?  Of course, I love the bell that was used to announce school would soon be in session.

It appears some of the children walked to school, while others came by carriage.

How times have changed.

For the background, I used a piece of black construction paper that had been exposed to light.  It had acquired a greenish tint, which added to the idea of a black or green chalk board.  The focal image is from the internet, and the carriage and written words are from a sack paper bag I received from an Amish shop a few months back.

Bleubeard and I want to thank you for visiting.  Please also join the two of us at Art Journal Journey, where this month the theme is Back to School.

Hi Elizabeth! Both pages are lovely. It probably is good to sleep more. I am an insomniac and up and down all night, a bit more sleep might liven me up, too. Those teachers surely had a hard life teaching all grades at once, I hope the kids behaved better than most do today. Thanks for more wonderful pages for AJJ, top marks again to you! Have a great day, hugs, Valerie

Wonderful pages! I love them both, you have really captured the differet styles so well. They are full of nostalgia and happy times, and using the carriage from the paper bag ties to the vintage theme beautifully! Wishing you a Happy Weekend! J :-)

I'm amazed by your sleep schedule. I'm often up a time or two during the night, but otherwise I sleep 7 hours or so during the night. There are nights, though, not uncommon nights, when sleep eludes me. I'd be unable to function well on your schedule.

My grandmother taught in a one-room schoolhouse. Things have changed a lot since those days.

Wonderful pages you created E!
You are on fire with your super theme for AJJ ♥
I have created so many pages in my head and finally got to let some out and play along.
Eleven or twelve hours is A LOT of sleep.
Seven or eight is a good number for me usually.
Guess it is different for each of us.
That lad certainly does look refreshed and ready to go ;-).
The boys in the tree in front of the one room school house made me giggle. But you're right "poor teacher"! They were probably a handful just in themselves.
I am sorry I have missed playing along with AJJ as much as I'd like this month. Life just got in the way and I want to keep up the purging momentum.
Hope you're having a great weekend.

12 hours of sleep????? I can't remember my son ever getting that much sleep in his life. LOL. That could explain a few things. Nice spreads.

OK, we are really on the same wavelength. Kind of scary. I am also working on the one room school house page- it was another page I started yesterday. :) I love the old photo. It is awesome. And your sleep page is a lot of fun. I bet those moms just wanted a little down time away from their kids. :) Hugs-Erika

Great pages. Love the one room school house..my paternal grandma was a school teacher in a one room school house before she married. I have a couple fun photos of her with her classes.

I went to a parochial school for first and second grade because I wasn't old enough to go to public school. I started first grade when I was five and never went to kindergarten. You were supposed to turn six before the end of the year in order to go to public school. (My mom denies it to this day but she just wanted me out of the house since my brother and sister were born three years after I was--one in January and one in December.) The parochial school was in a Methodist church and I had to pass tests to be allowed into first grade. We had one teacher for grades 1-3 and another for 4-6. Was as close as you could get to a one room school house in the 50s suburbs, I think. Two room school house--kind of. We were all in one room with a folding divider down the center. If I got done with the assignment then I could go help other kids with their work. I even helped some second graders when I was in first grade. I loved it!

But I was tested and let into public school in third grade and it was a living hell for me. I was used to getting up and walking around, helping the teachers, talking to everybody...you can imagine how that went over in public school. I had a teacher with a bun and red circles on her cheeks who rapped knuckles with rulers, made you stand in the corner or out in the hallway, sent you to the principal, made me stand with my nose pressed into a circle on the blackboard, made me sit on my hands for hours (teasing me that she didn't think I could talk without my hands)...it took months for me to learn to be a robot. But it did teach me that my spirit is hard to break, making people laugh eased tension (well, not for the teacher), and a lot of people liked me even if I was in trouble all the time--LOL!

Lots of memories bubbled up with this spread for some reason--LOL!

Another two fabulous pages Elizabeth! At first when I read that you had such short sleeps I was surprised - then I worked out that I am awake (mostly!) for around 15 or 16 hours most days! I go to bed for around 7 - 8 hours - usually interrupted by getting up a couple of times! I must confess that on nights when I have less than 7 hours I tend to nod off for a few minutes in the daytime! I don't envy the teacher in the page at the bottom - those boys in the tree look like they could be quite a handful! Hugs, Chrisx
