Friday Smiles 178: An herb garden haircut

Today I'm joining Annie at A Stitch in Time with Friday Smiles.  It's been a rather difficult couple of weeks, and I want to put all the drama aside and enjoy the weekend with a smile.

Early yesterday morning it rained, so I didn't have to water.  I decided it was time to harvest my herbs for a second time this summer.  I was surprised how much they have grown.

I shouldn't be surprised, though, since we had 7.77 inches of rain in two days.  The two rivers that surround my neighborhood were nearly outside their banks, too.

I love taking photos when the weather is overcast.  You can see my four tomato plants have grown into a single mess.
My Sweet 100 tomatoes have been giving me lots of beautiful tomatoes since July 1, but today was the first day I found two Roma tomatoes that were red enough to pick.

Late in the afternoon,

lots of these plants had been given a hair cut.

I cut the basil plants practically in half, as well as the Stevia.

But the biggest change was in the dill and purple basil.

I'm determined to keep a positive attitude, and won't be discussing my basement flood again.  At least not until the mess is cleaned up completely.  Thanks for respecting my wishes on that, too.

Now let's visit Annie at A Stitch in Time and start the weekend with a smile or even a laugh.  I hope this garden entry puts a bit of a smile on your face because it has mine, which is just what I need right now.

Thanks also for joining me.  I greatly appreciate your support, whether it's with paper or fabric arts, or fun in my gardens.

Your herb garden is looking good, and I am sure you are enjoying the fruits of your labours. Staying positive is so important, and a wonderful way we can help ourselves. Have a good day, and enjoy your weekend! Oh, and I read your comment....Hugs, Valerie

It's good so see you joining us again Elizabeth. I'm a great believer in not dwelling on the difficult things in life (I'm sure no one would read my blog at the mo if I did lol). I'm sending you biggest hugs to deal with your I troubles and a big thank you for sharing your gorgeous herb garden. I see our tomatoes are growing too but are still green....I can't wait for them to ripen but we may need rather more sunshine than we're getting.
Hugs,
Annie x

Fantastic herb garden. It is wonderful to just touch the plants and then enjoy the wonderful smells. I like to taste a little bit as well--hope the plants don't mind.

Have a lovely weekend

Because I've been wrapped up in my own issues of recent weeks, esp the death of my dad, I haven't been catching up with blogs so had missed your news. I'm very sorry to hear that you had that disaster in your basement but you're right to keep positive. It can be fixed even if it's a pain and who knows, may end up being better than before. I'm sending you huge hugs though for a bit of moral support.
I wanted to say thank you for the lovely ATC you sent me! I went to see Julia a couple of days ago and she passed it on then. How kind of you, I really appreciate you thinking of me :-)
Sending love,
Jan xx

Your garden is growing beautifully Elizabeth! Wish our basil was thriving-must be the sun is just too hot right now:( No tomatoes yet either but at least they are looking much better than the last few years. I'll have to share a photo or two. The lettuces and cucumbers have been wonderful!

Your garden looks like it LOVES the sun after all that rain. My tomatoes are still green so seeing your red ones makes me jealous. Nothing better than a fresh tomato and, I will add, the smell of fresh basil. Always reminds me of summer. Was worrying about you but glad to see you have such a good attitude-how could a garden not do that? Happy sunny Friday- and stay cool. Hugs-Erika

Your herbs all look so healthy, I think they give there own special aroma as well, especially if you rub a leaf between your finger tips.
Enjoy wour weekend.

Your herb garden is really looking great. I love that little bird you have in one of the pots. Oh and those tomatoes! Lovely!
I'm slightly envious that you have a stevia plant. I haven't been able to find one yet. But we can get the dried leaves locally so I'm glad about that.
Good that you are so positive. Every cloud has a silver lining.
Hugs and blessings,
Lisca

Lovely to see everything flourishing in your herb garden E!!!
Looking good.
No one can water better than Mother Nature.
I must confess I was totally distracted by those gorgeous berries in some of your photos. I never met a berry I did not like.
Happy Weekend to you from hot and humid Virginia oxo

Hi Elizabeth, lovely garden photos. The poppy photos are from The Lincoln castle and the ones that were sold last year were at the Tower of London covering a much larger area. They were sold but it was decided that other parts of the country should have chance to see a similar display and new poppies have been made and are touring the country, these are the one on my photograph. They are due to stay in Lincoln until September. Have a great Friday and a happy weekend, Angela x

Sending you a huge hug Elizabeth, lovely that you have had a productive time in your herb garden - which I am soooo envious about - looks amazing - my garden has been so neglected for the last 6 months so can't wait to start re-organising it - you've given me some encouragement - our recent rain will make it easier. Keep positive and have a lovely weekend Cheers Robyn

You'll do what you have to do. We know that. I think it's smart not to drown in the drama and worry. Your herb garden looks fantastic!! Absolutely fantastic!! *love and hugs*

Your garden is looking well and I'n glad you are able to harvest so much. I won't have tomatoes for a while yet as they were so late getting planted.Plus the darn Horned Tomato Worms have been a major problem this year. The only one happy with the tomatoes is the sons Bearded Dragon as we feed him the worms.
Glad you are able to put all of the bad stuff behind you. Dwelling on it does no good at all. Have a grand weekend!

Your garden looks great. I haven't even looked at mine today. Our basement flooded last night so you know how much work I had ahead of me today. Our main drain backed up...luckily not on the sewage side...just the kitchen/laundry/craftroom side. Still messy. I am so tired!!!! And I am still not done for the night. I just had to take a break for a bit.

What a joy to have such a good place you can devote to herbs. Your tomatoes look wonderful -I can almost taste them. I'm gradually setting aside more space for herbs, but the pots have to be scattered among the other plants here. I do love plants :) and they bring peace to a place, I think. I love how you've arranged your grounds. Thanks for the photos :)

seeing your garden has made me want to get out into my own. Yours is such a productive one. If I could stop faffing around for long enough with other things I am sure I could achieve the same haha

Wow! This would make anyone smile but to be the proud owner(and grower) of these wonderful plants must give you such a good feeling! I can almost smell those fresh tomatoes!! Hugs, Chrisx

It is nice to see you had some sunshine after the rain. I am sure your herbs appreciated it too. It is so satisfying to pick produce you have grown. In UK I used to grow the cherry tomatoes, Gardeners Delight, partly because I liked the name, and also because my dad always grew them. I picked so many from just a few plants. I don't grow them now as it is not really worth it when water is precious, and I can buy them almost as fresh from the village market.
make something delicious with all those lovely fresh herbs. Hugs Kate x

Your herb garden is fabulous! Don't you just love the way they smell when you are cutting them back? I don't have nearly so much as you but love each one! Truth be told, I'm a little envious! What a bounty you will have!
