Honoring Flag Day in the USA

Today is the day we in the US honor Flag Day.

Although I created this as one of my daily index cards (ICAD), which you will see the rest of this week's entries on Friday (note the single staple on the flag pole), I simply had to recognize and honor Flag Day.

Flag Day is June 14 each year, where we honor the United States flag and commemorate that date in 1777 when the United States approved the design for its first national flag.  Other countries, such as Canada (February 15) and Australia (September 3) have their own Flag Days.

According to the National Flag Day Foundation:
On June 14th, 1885, Bernard J. Cigrand, a 19 year old teacher at Stony Hill School, placed a 10 inch, 38- star flag in a bottle on his desk then assigned essays on the flag and its significance.
The first celebration of the U.S. Flag's birthday was held in 1877 on the 100th anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777, two years after what was officially recognized as Flag Day by Cigrand, who is now known as the "Father of Flag Day."  Over the next 30 years, most states and local governments adopted the practice, which remained a state or local celebration.

According to Military.com:
In 1916, the anniversary of the Flag Resolution of 1777 became a nationally observed event by a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson. However, it was not designated as National Flag Day until August 3rd, 1949, when an Act of Congress designated June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
The US Flag was created due to a resolution which read:
"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation. "
Although this is solely a US event, I am sharing it with my friends at Moo Mania and More, whose theme this fortnight is Anything Goes.

we do not have a flag day here in Germany. flags are hissed on certain days of the year, but there is no day honoring the flag itself.
