Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States. It is observed on the last Monday of May, honoring military personnel who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces whether during deployment overseas or in training and service in the U.S.
Have a meaningful Memorial Day.
When I think of Memorial Day, this poem, written in 1915 by Canadian officer and surgeon John McCrae always comes to mind:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
It is such a powerful poem. And sadly we continue to send our young to die...
ReplyDelete...yesterday we visit an area Veterans Cemetery and say the rolls of white stones.
ReplyDeleteMy town will have a Memorial Day parade where they visit all the area cemeteries and read the roll call of those who died during wars going back to the Revolutionary War. Very moving ceremony

ReplyDeleteIt is so sad. Why can´t "leaders" not do the job themselves but send others? On FB you see so many crippled young Ukrainian soldiers, men and women, children actually still who proudly smile into the camera. Yes, they have survived but to which price.
