Bleubeard and I are back with another journal page for Art Journal Journey.
Farm Fresh is the title of this latest collage. It's an example of both our themes, which are Collage Fodder, Food and Drink, or both.
The detail shots are below.
The inspiration for this journal page came from my mailbox. The farm fresh card was a bit of "junk mail" that told about food insecurity. I almost put it in an envelope and sent it on to my friend Mae, who often talks about food insecurity. After reading it and looking at the image, I decided to keep it. I only wish I had taken a photo of the statistics on the reverse side before I decided to use it in my art.
The scariest message on the reverse was the question, "What if you only had this can of corn to feed four people?"
I began by coloring the substrate with green and blue watercolors and water soluble crayons. I then adhered the card to the page and colored around the card to match the substrate. I fear I colored inside the can a few times.
Next, I found some collage fodder in the form of a security envelope, a banana label and an avocado label. I then colored a sheet of paper using a water soluble crayon. I wrapped it around the slide holder, then created the assembly. Once the assembly was attached to the page, I added a flower I colored a mustard yellow using two watercolors that I combined to give it a mustard color. I placed a tiny sea shell in the center of the flower.
Finally, I added the word "important" I computer generated, along with a bread tab that I purposely stuck out over the edge of the page.
You might have noticed there is no date on this page, even though there was ample room. This was actually the first page I created. I then put it away and forgot about it until just this week when I stumbled onto it.

are grateful you visited today and hope to see you at Art Journal Journey with your own take on Collage Fodder, Food and Drink, or both.
We are also joining AEDM.
Yet another fun take on the theme. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteThis collage made me hungry, vegetarian that I am. Lol. Nicely done!
ReplyDeleteThank you for thinking of me! Yes, I have been thinking more about food insecurity, but I haven't had any new ideas for what to say about it on my blog. I'm glad you creatively incorporated this image, and will try to post something soon.
ReplyDeletebest... mae at maefood.blogspot.com
We donate monthly to our local food bank. They teach cooking and food prep, and are teaching kids to cook.
ReplyDeleteLovely page great theme
ReplyDeleteSad we have to think about it, and in so many ways, too.
ReplyDeleteI remember the old days when you bought something and just took off the lid.
These days... you neither know what the producer put in there or if some activist or terrorist found a way to poison you anyways...
Good piece of art to think about it!
I like the way you recycle objects to use in your art.
ReplyDeleteI left you a long comment this morning and it's gone again! Anywsay, I love your corny collage page! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThis is a nice page, and I like the topic you bring up. We also donate to our local food bank. It is good to know that our help really matters.
ReplyDeleteI like what you did with this mail piece. I especially like the slide you used. I've forgotten about using them; remember when they were big? It looks great and works great on your piece. And food insecurity is a big problem, and I'm sure will be more so this winter with the cost of heating fuel as well as everything else right now. This is a great way to showcase that issue too. Have a great start to your weekend. hugs-Erika
ReplyDeleteI love the theme and style you have used for this book of thematic collage fodder. And also appreciate your explaining the process!
ReplyDeleteThis is really striking and having read where the main image came from it is quite rightly so! I love the background you created and with all of the collage elements this really does make a great page for your shared theme with Bleubeard at Art Journal Journey, hugs, Chrisx
