Earth Hour is an annual worldwide environmental event that brings attention to the effects of climate change on our globe. Climate change transcends borders, so as good neighbors who live on this planet, it is important we do our part. As a result, this is a scheduled post, because I am off the grid.
The official Earth Hour web site reminds us "it is powerful, yet humbling to think that our actions today will decide what tomorrow will look like for generations to come." Normally we are asked to switch our lights off for an hour at 8.30pm (20:30) local time on the last Saturday of March. This year the date is March 19, instead.
Although I've participated in this event for three years, I wanted to know more about its history. WWF (formerly World Wildlife Fund) organizes the annual Earth Hour event. It appears WWF is no longer just about saving wildlife, but now champions saving the earth's natural environment and resources, too.I'm doing my part tonight.
The Earth Hour web site suggests we could celebrate this annual event with friends and family, or through a community effort. Bleubeard plans to join me in the celebration, as I guess you can see at least part of him in the doorway to the kitchen. Squiggles will be hiding in the office or my bedroom, whichever door he can slip through quickest.
I never use my flash, so I had trouble figuring out how to use it. It certainly puts a lot of light in an otherwise dark room. 
All non-essential electricity and gas has been turned off tonight,
including my computer and television. Essential electricity means I
won't unplug my refrigerator or my telephone. However, I won't
be cooking, doing laundry, vacuuming, sewing, watching tv, heating my home, or making art, unless it's
by these candles. Possibly you will join or have joined me when it is or was in your time zone.

ReplyDeleteOh poop! Your post is the first time I have seen this mentioned this year and now it is the 20th and too late. :( So glad you had a quiet evening without any electric (hope it wasn't too cold)!!
ReplyDeleteGood for you. I never heard of this, and I should have, being a biology teacher, but I haven't. Not even on the news either. Hmm. I know if more people did this and didn't waste tons of resources all the time the world would be a better place. I try to do my part all the time, but it isn't easy sometimes. Hope you stayed warm and had a relaxing evening. Hugs!

ReplyDeleteI somehow missed it this year, having seen no promotional info at all and only a couple of reports of it afterwards. *sigh* Maybe I'll be more in-the-know next year.
ReplyDeleteI missed this one...I was at craft club at my neighbors house but I'm absolutely positive that our electric meter was spinning like crazy at home. We'll have to do it another night instead.
