I tried a new technique using Sharpies, but didn't create step-out photos because I wasn't sure if it would work. I'm not terribly sure it has worked, at least not for the images I used.
I have a friend who gave me several stamped images. Too good to throw away, I saw a theme. I had no idea what type of ink she used, but I was adventurous and got out my Sharpies and some 91% Isoprophyl Alcohol. I tried to back the images with a few dictionary definitions I thought sounded appropriate, too.
Those apples won't get delivered by RFD, but might get sold from the back of this truck. I began each piece by swiping randomly over the image. I was going for a painterly look, thinking the Sharpie ink would spread out much like watercolor pencils do. Silly me! They didn't act like watercolor pencils at all when they were subjected to the alcohol. The yellow spread the best of any of the Sharpie colors. Each color reacted a bit differently.
The horse was probably the worst mistake I made. It was an accident looking for a place to happen. The alcohol spread everywhere except where it was supposed to.However, I hope no one objects that I offer this for the Masculine entry at Moo-Mania. After all, these are mostly what we think of as "manly" things.Thanks for visiting. I'm always grateful. Be sure to visit Moo-Mania and More for many more masculine entries. But hurry. Not sure what you were going for because the results you got are terrific. I like the extra care of matching the dictionary pgs to the image.

Experimenting is good, even when it doesn't work out like you planned. It is a nice "manly" page. I've used a bit of water on sharpies before they dry. Mystele shared that technique and it works pretty good. xox
ReplyDeleteThe images and the background certainly are a good "manly" combo. I'd have thought that 91% alcohol would cause more ink spreading, too. Maybe the texture of the paper had something to do with it, as in absorbing the ink before you could get it sprayed and reactive.

ReplyDeleteI never understand what "masculine" and feminine" mean and think it depends on who you ask, so I imagine the presentations for this prompt vary wildly. One of my kids loved all things car-and-truck, and he was a boy; but I always think of horses and colts as a "girl" interest. I love the colors you got :)
ReplyDeletedefinitely masculine and all in the farmer range, and I like the dictionary paper touch, always think that adds interest to a page, I never get theeffect I want when using alcohol with ink, so I think you did well!!

I love those images!! The tractor is great!! My neighbor has a tractor in his garage and gives rides in the summer to the neighborhood kids. We even hook up the hay wagon and have a suburban hayride occasionally. :) Adult beverages may have been consumed. ;)
ReplyDeleteThese are terrific E! Using dictionary papers for the backgrounds is always a feature I like. YOU may not think the watercolor effect is right, but I DO think it is right on!!

What a great masculine page this is, love the images you picked. I love anything with book paper, especially dictionary paper. The sharpies/colors look wonderful Elizabeth, even the horse.
