Super moon on August 10, 2014

I decided to try to get a photo or three of the super moon that occurred tonight, August 10.

So what, you ask, is a "super moon?"  According to Wikipedia:
A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth.

NASA explains that a super moon can be up to 14 percent closer and 30 percent brighter.  This year the super moon also becomes full during the same hour that the moon comes closest to the Earth.

How does the super moon differ from the harvest moon?  The harvest moon is the first full moon closest to the autumnal equinox. Now you have everything you need to know about the super moon, and I need to find a site that has less trees so I can get a better photo of this moon.

I was just playing around with my new camera and learning all the settings.  These photos were hand held, not on a tripod, and not on a timer.  The marvels of digital photography.  Three photos, three fairly decent shots, even through the trees.  Yes, I love my new camera.  Please enjoy.

  1. Love it! An amateur astronomer tried to tell me Super Moons weren't closer. I didn't believe him lol. Your camera did a very good job of capturing the bigness of it : )

  2. Thanks for sharing and yes you have mastered the camera settings. I love watching the moon and get to do a lot of it at work during the night, there is something extremely peaceful about the moon.

  4. I posted about the moon today too. Great minds and all that, heehee.
I tried to get a photo but mine was nowhere as interesting as yours. Mine just a big white dot on black. You are getting good with your new camera.

  5. I got up and looked about 11:30 and saw no difference from any other moon. I think maybe we are too far north to see a big change...not sure

  7. Due to not sleeping well, I woke as per usual around 3am and turned on the TV and the news mentioned the super moon so I thought I'd have a look out of the window and sure enough, there it was, slap bang outside my window with a few wispy clouds around it. Didn't feel it was that "big" however but it sure was bright! Unfortunately my camera was downstairs so I didn't take a photo, oh well. BJ
