Kristin our lovely host of
Summer of Color, or SOC 4 as we know it, has issued the first challenge.

This week we had to use Aqua blue and yellow, with a splash of hot pink. What better way to start, than with the printer inks my friend gave me last week.

After I tore a few pieces of an old bed sheet to size, I began by laying two sheets of paper towel over one sheet of wax paper, which covered my plate I would use to catch the ink.

I twisted the torn sheet until I had a shape I liked.

Using the cyan and yellow printer inks, I covered both sides of the fabric.

I did the same with magenta and yellow on another sheet. I even liked the paper towels, but didn't use them in this project.

In my sewing room, I cut three hearts that were mainly yellow and hot pink. I worried that the yellow in the main fabric was not bright enough or equal to the aqua, but that was how it turned out and there wasn't much I could do to change it now.

I believe the colors are truer in the scan than the photos,

as can be seen in this close up of one of the hearts.
Originally, I was going to add words like joy, hope, and love to the hearts, but couldn't remember if we were allowed to use black, so I left them plain.

ReplyDelete(And you can totally use black if you'd like ;)
Super project with stitching and lots of colourful pictures to show how much effort and time went into it. Fab : )
ReplyDeleteLove it!! Not started thinking about mine yet.
ReplyDeleteOh! This has cheered me up! Absolutely love this Elizabeth, joyous colours of summer indeed!!! Chrisx
ReplyDeletesuch a lovely and summery piece
ReplyDeletei love that you went to fabric for the challenge
and i agree, pretty paper towels!
What fabulous results you achieved with the printer inks! I love the way they bled into each other for the blended background. Hearts are a favorite icon of mine. Great job, Elizabeth!
ReplyDeleteI love it too, not got round to mine either as had my craft club in my house this morning and only just cleared up. BJ
ReplyDeleteI reeally like what you've done here Elizabeth :D
ReplyDeleteI was beginning to feel a little intimidated by all the loveliness already posted (1st time on soc), but now I know I can use black, I feel more relaxed in being able to stamp if I like. I did a piece already, just using the three colours in oil pastl but then I looked at what others had done first, and then saw I could have used black to outline _ oh stop it Twinks - too much over thinking!!!
Love what you've done Elizabeth, did I say that already, lol :D
love this!!
ReplyDeleteNice stitching!!! ;~)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely gorgeous, Elizabeth. I wondered what you would do with those inks but no way did I imagine this beautiful work - love it. Elizabeth xx

Elizabeth, this is a wonderful piece! I love the rainbow thread too. Amazing that you used those old inks to get such a beautiful effect on fabric. And thanks for showing us the stages you went through. Now I can't wait to see where that paper towel ends up. :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!
ReplyDeleteNice image on cloth ---and I like how your inks mixed together.
ReplyDeleteI thought I was the only one that used printer inks for art work.
Thanks for stopping to see my SOC.
Elizabeth, this is so pretty!! I love that you made hearts! The colors are perfect I think!! Yay for first week of SOC!!
ReplyDeleteI've been playing with the colors too, filled up some ICADs with them.
Glad you like the colors too :)
You really outdid yourself, Elizabeth! What a wonderful and creative way to use the SOC colors!
ReplyDeleteThis is great I've never used printer ink :)
ReplyDeleteLove it and now that you have added your photo to the pool-- I'd go back and add the word. I think it would really cap it off.
ReplyDeleteThose are great colors and I love the tie-dyed effect and the fact that you got your touch of hot pink from the thread, cleaver girl!!

Fabulous work, Elizabeth! My dh just "gifted" to me a refill pack of printer inks that he has no use for any longer. Woo hoo! I am going to try them on paper, too.
ReplyDeletethis is so beautiful-even without words. You're off to a great start for the SOC challenge!

What a great idea! So clever
ReplyDeleteX
Very nice, ElizABETH, i LOVE THE WAY THE COLORS BLEND
ReplyDeleteThat is really neat!! Love the colors and the hearts!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment about my "wet" embossing, I tend to call it heat embossing so your reference gave me a chuckle. It is by no means "perfect" at all, but these days I "embrace the imperfections" to coin a Timmy phrase. In fact I just like the imperfections, it gives it a speckled look. I did use a brush to get rid of a lot of powder round the flowers though. Oh and the embossing folder was one of the ladies who came to my craft group Monday. I just embossed a few plain white sheets using her folders and just HAD to use it. BJ
ReplyDeleteHi! I have not seen you on the blogs since Inspiration Avenue a year or so ago. I love your work...love how you showed your process. Good to find you here.
ReplyDeleteIt's really good to see a textile piece. Your process was fascinating to read - printer inks for dying - interesting, nice work.
ReplyDeleteok...I know i saw this and left a comment before but hmmm...not there.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love what you did with the inks and fabric. Perfect colors for you to experiment with this week.
super clever use of materials, you are so creative!
ReplyDeleteI love what you did for this challenge...really nice job!
ReplyDeleteThis is great, I love how your colours all blend beautifully, great to have used fabrics!
ReplyDeleteOh I so wished that was for me. Lovely piece.
ReplyDeleteI wish I could remember to take step by step photos......all the way through. I usually get the first two steps, then I'm off and running and forget the camera. LOL
ReplyDeleteAn other great piece of art, I really like that you DID NOT add any words to the hearts.
Hugs......Krisha
I love this! What a great idea to use printer inks, thanks for the inspiration. I lost you along the way, so glad to have caught up with you again.
