My friend CJ has a weekly segment called "How does your garden grow?" Let me show you how mine grows.
Way back on June 16, I showed my basil (in the large left pot. Next to it was my borage and to the right of that in a blue pot was cilantro. Something nearly killed my borage because it was dug up and on the ground where I found it a few days later. Sadly, I didn't take any photos of the borage or the cilantro this evening (Thursday after I mowed).
I now have so much basil, I will never be able to use it all. 
This is the bee balm that wasn't even in the photo from before. I'm not sure if I should dead head those three pods or leave them. I really know nothing about this plant, other than it is supposed to attract bees.
Something has been nibbling on my dill. Yesterday when I watered, there was a lovely yellow scented flower that formed small umbels. There are a couple starting to form now, one you can see clearly in the photo.
I keep saying I must transplant and divide this geranium, but I haven't had time to do that yet.
At least you can see I mowed, although I fear the blade is in serious need of sharpening before I mow again.
At least the deed is done for a week. It has taken its toll, in both time and energy, though.Now for a few funnies:

Hi Elizabeth. I like a challenge so I investigated bee balm and apparently it is also known as Bergamot, and is grea for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It says you should deadhead it regularly to get lots more flowers, but seed heads left on the plant will attract the birds in the autumn.The leaves have a strong smell and can be brewed to make a tea that is good for colds. It likes a sunny spot so I am going to look for some seeds. I think it is really pretty. You can divide the root in the sutumn or take cuttings.

Regarding your bee balm, go ahead and dead head. It never hurts the plant and encourages more leaf/stem growth but not sure if it will flower more. They are really field flowers, but around here they bloom for a lot of the summer. Not sure what it is in Kansas. And your basil looks great. It's a good year for basil here too. ReplyDeleteYou've got all kinds of garden goodies. I ended up pulling up my bee balm and giving it to someone who lives out in the country and has plenty of room. It attracted too many bumble bees.

Well done for keeping your lawn so pretty. I don't know about bee balm, but I know that dead heading is good for a plant. Kate found out that bee balm is also known as bergamot. We used to desinfect stuff with bergamot in the hospital in Italy. It smelled pleasantly too. I know bergamot tea too.
ReplyDeleteAs for having too much basil... my friend had a glut of basil in her garden and she gave me a load. I made pesto and filled an ice cube tray with blobs of pesto and whenever I need it I take a 'cube' out. I used one yesterday when I cooked pasta and fried some fridge left-overs to put on the pasta. Turned out very nice.
My sandals are proper walking sandals that I bought in a sports shop. Very comfortable. I have just added two photos of my sandals to my blog post. If you go back to my post, you will find them at the end, just before the funnies.

ReplyDeleteEarl Grey tea is flavoured with oil of bergamot, so maybe the aroma is familiar. That’s the only culinary use that I ever heard of, and all the other ideas from you and the commenters are fascinating. Your basil looks fantastic — and our dill is a sad droopy mess, wish it would be like yours.
