Congratulations to Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, soon to be Justice Jackson, on her bi-partisan confirmation to the Supreme Court of the United States.It's still chilly where Bleubeard and I live, so we are continuing our trip to the Caribbean. If you are geographically challenged, like me, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, as I mentioned yesterday. It is due east of Hispaniola, which was our first stop in the Caribbean. Just so everyone knows, the background to today's art was created back in late March.
Today Bleubeard and I are visiting San Juan, specifically Old San Juan. Old San Juan is one of the most popular cruise destinations in the Caribbean and the most visited place in Puerto Rico. Old San Juan is an islet connected to the main island by three bridges. Old San Juan is the cultural hub of Puerto Rico and the most culturally rich destination in the Caribbean. 
Old San Juan is the oldest settlement in Puerto Rico. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a U.S. National Park, and on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. 
Some streets in Old San Juan are still paved with blue cobblestones from the Spanish colonial era. It appears to be one of the major attractions.

I started this page using 110 lb. cardstock to which I had previously added four colors of staz-on and 91% isopropyl alcohol. The images came from three different Caribbean cruise magazines. I backed both the descriptive words (printed on recycled paper) and the images with black paint chip samples. I computer generated the introduction using recycled paper from my recycle tray and adhered the words over a piece of used security envelope. I added the washi tape I will always use in my Caribbean spreads.This is Day 8 of 22, and I created a spread using cardstock to which I added the last of staz-on and alcohol. Bleubeard and I sincerely hope you'll join us today.

ReplyDeleteOld San Juan looks great. I mean for me it looks very familiar. The streets here look like that and the orange house with the balcony could have come straight from our village!
ReplyDeleteAs for cobbled streets, in Europe they are common, because they are made of granite or some other hard rock and they last forever. Belgium used to be particularly infamous for its cobbles. And France too. That's probably why Frensch cars have such good suspensions!

ReplyDeleteIt's chilly here too. But I am rather sad to here that Old San Juan is a popular cruise destination. That means it would be really crowded. It looks like a wonderful place to visit though. One of these years I should visit the Caribbean since it is in our backyard so to speak. I have been to St. Thomas and St. John, for my honeymoon 33+ years ago, but many people I know have been to lots of islands in the Caribbean. They're all so different they say. ReplyDeleteWe spent a long weekend in San Juan once, and didn't find it terribly crowded. Later we spent around a week at a very obscure resort on the south coast, extremely far from everything, and mostly patronized by people from San Juan on weekend holidays. We rented a car and found that we had a lot of difficulty finding the way to various places that we visited: the road signs were terrible. Much harder than in Europe! But I think we saw another side of the island. I hope you will consider "visiting" for real not just on a cruise ship that allows you a few hours ashore.

The confirmation hearings were interesting, especially in light of the hearings of trump-nominated folks. What a contrast!
