Friday Smiles 306 and a new host at Art Journal Journey

I want to thank all the Friday Smiles ladies for your kind comments last Friday, even though I was gone.  I haven't had time to go through the photos for the next area of the Museum of World Treasures, so all you get today are a few funnies I found when cleaning out my office last year.

Barbara Walters had done a story on gender roles in Kuwait several years before the Gulf War, and she noted then that women customarily walked about 10 feet behind their husbands.

She returned to Kuwait after the war and observed that the men now walked several yards behind their wives.

Ms Walters approached one of the women for an explanation. “This is marvelous,” she said. “What enabled women here to achieve this reversal of roles?”

The Kuwaiti woman replied, “Land mines.”

A college senior took his new girlfriend to a football game.

The young couple found their seats in the crowded stadium and was watching the action when a substitute was sent into the game. As the promising young player ran onto the field to take his position, the boy pointed at him and said to his girlfriend, “Keep an eye on that fellow. I expect him to be our best man next year.”

His girlfriend snuggled closer to him and said, “That’s the strangest proposal I ever heard, but I accept!.”

Yet another story debunked and labeled an urban legend. According to NASA radio transcripts, it never happened.

When Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, he not only gave his famous “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” statement but followed it by several other remarks. Just before he re-entered the lander, he said, “Good luck Mr. Gorsky.” Many people at NASA thought it concerned some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs.

Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what “Good luck Mr. Gorsky” meant, but Armstrong always just smiled. On July 5, 1995, in Tampa, Florida, while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question. This time Armstrong finally responded. Mr. Gorsky had died and so Armstrong felt he could finally answer the question.

When he was a kid, Neil was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball, which landed in the front of the bedroom window of his neighbors, Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky. As he picked up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs. Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky, “Sex! You want sex?! You’ll get sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!”

According to a radio report, a middle school in Oregon was faced with a unique problem. A number of girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the bathroom. That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Finally the principal decided that something had to be done. She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night. To demonstrate how difficult it was to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance guy to clean one of the mirrors.

He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it into the toilet and then cleaned the mirror.

Since then there have been no lip prints on the mirror.

Finally, I will leave you with classified ads found in actual newspapers:

Now let's meet this month's host at Art Journal Journey.    This month our host is Rike of Rike's Art or My little creative world.   She has chosen the color yellow as her theme.  Per Rike, yellow stands for joy, optimism, and vitality.  Here is my first contribution this month.

 

I call this one Friendship.  According to Rike, the main focus should be yellow, but we can use other colors as well.  I just hope I used enough yellow to qualify.  It's really obvious I scanned this entry and it's also obvious my scanner is on its last leg.

For this page, I began with a sheet of 110 lb. cardstock that I colored yellow.  I then used leftover cardstock from a previous entry and matched it with a sheet of flowery cardstock.  I sewed a length of yellow rick rack to the left side and sewed the remainder of the pieces to the page using variegated thread.
