Rain's Thursday Art Date: Abstract

Today we're once again meeting at Rain's for her Thursday Art Date.  This week, the theme is Abstract.

I'll begin with this abstract painting from 2014 that took two days to complete mostly because of the drying time between layers.  Don't you just love humidity?

The first layer was lavender and pearl white mixed together.  The next day I added the black acrylic, then sprayed areas with distilled water.  I love how the paint moved around once the water was applied.  I'm really happy with this abstract.  I called it "Running in Circles."

I realized I had a ton of these 365 collages I made in 2019 that included yellow as part of the collage or abstract. I decided it was time to recycle a few of them, since otherwise they will only collect dust.

An abstract called "Day on the Water."

I painted this abstract of the twin towers shortly before the first plane hit on September 11, 2001.  I called it "8:25 am EDT."

This is what I wrote when I first showed this abstract:
The title reflects the time a mere 20 minutes before the North Tower was hit by the hijacked passenger jet American Airlines Flight 11 on 9/11/2001.  It was a warm, cloudless day filled with hope and promise.  Twenty minutes later, many lives were forever changed.  I tried to show the positive of this day, hoping the memories aren't too painful for those of you who see this.

As I made this piece, I cried.  I cried when I loaded it onto blogger.  I've never had anything affect me so radically, even though I live nowhere near NYC.  I hope you don't cry when you see this.  It was created as a tribute, not out of sadness, but honor and remembrance.

I called this abstract tag "Tiptoe through the tulips."

Abstract 76.722
An index card I created in June, 2020.

This is an abstract I created in 2014 for T Stands For Tuesday.

For this abstract, I got out my watercolors and watercolor paper.  They are subtle colors, some I even combined to make new colors. I'm calling it "Dreamland" because the colors are so dreamy and soothing.  The size is 8" X 8" (20,32 cm X 20,32 cm).

For this abstract, I allowed my imagination to take over.   I called this "Cat Fight" because I saw two cats' ears in this piece.  Thankfully, Bleubeard was not one of the cats.  Size is 8" X 10" (20,32 cm X 25,4 cm).

In 2014, I purchased a fan brush and used it to create this.  I didn't care for it.  It just didn't live up to my expectations.  I think it was too hard to manipulate.  I kept cutting more and more of this abstract away until I thought I wasn't going to have anything I liked.  It is 5" X 10" (12,8 cm X 25,4 cm).  I was going for circles, but didn't get that many.  Because a name didn't come easily, I called this one "Untitled with Fan Brush."

I called this abstract "The Eye."  Is it my imagination, or do you see an eye, too?  The size is 8" X 10" (20,32 cm X 25,4 cm).

 Now let's switch gears.

Wichita State has an impressive collection of sculptures.  There are 76.  In my opinion, this is the jewel in the crown.  It is a Joan Miro.  It is titled Personnages Oiseaux or Bird People.

As I noted when I first shared this, there's a story behind this original mosaic of Venetian glass and marbles, the only one of its kind.  First, it is the only piece like it that Miro ever created.  Second, he donated the design, while WSU students and private donors funded production which took five years to create and install.  It was completed in 1978.

In the early 2000s, this beauty was beginning to show its age.  In 2009, the museum decided that it needed to be repaired.  It took two years to determine the best way to achieve that, because it had to be studied before it could be removed from the side of the museum building.

This is a huge mosaic at 28 X 52 feet (8,53 X 15,85 meters). Each of the 88 panels was removed and taken to a restoration specialist.  It took five years to complete the restoration, which included developing and implementing new methods and practices specifically for this work, while staying true to Miro's original design.  In addition to the glass and marble restoration, the original particleboard backing of the tiles was removed and replaced with stainless steel to prevent deterioration.  This beauty was reinstalled in late 2016 and now shines much like it must have when it was first created.

For those of you unfamiliar with Miro, he was a Spanish painter, who also worked in sculpture and ceramics.  He was born in Barcelona.  He is most famous for surrealism and abstract art, both of which are evident in this installation.

At the Wichita Art Museum, I found this abstract and fell in LOVE with it.  It is an abstract I can wrap my head around.

I seem to be drawn to abstract art.

This and the abstract above were photographed on the same day at the Wichita Art Museum or WAM.

And finally, I added this right before I linked.  Blame it on Rain, because her drawing was what inspired this.

This is the image I used as my word of the year one year.  I would never have thought of it as an abstract, but I suspect it is.

All art created by me.  All photos taken by me.

Thank you beyond belief for visiting today.  I am truly grateful to you, my friends, followers, readers, and lurkers for taking time out of your day.  Bleubeard and I hope to also see you at Rain's Thursday Art Date, although Bleubeard feels I should stick to mixed media and leave abstracts to people who know what they're doing.   I bet he's surprised to see he got the last word today!

Lots of beautiful art again today. Miro is always one of my fave painters. I think none of us will ever forget the horror as the Twin Towers fell, such a terrible day. Mixed media can also be abstract, no problem! Have a great day, Valerie

Your colourful art is inspirational, absolutely love it all. Yes the Twin towers was horrific and it was the day I lost my job as practice manage of a large medical center due to redundancy but the loss of lives was so much more horrific than losing a job.... hgs.x

Oh, I´m running in circles, too, but I miss the rain!

Well. Like mostly everyone I have tears in my eyes.
9/11, it scattered the whole world. I sometimes wonder what if.... there´d been officers like these days on the planes?
Those kids that were born are adults by now. Can you imagine this, I can not.
I read a book one of the "helpers" wrote, oh, I had bad dreams. But also smiles. Smile on how people cared for each other, helped each other and became friends.
"Reluctant Hero" by Michael Banfante, if you want to know.
I remember that day - and I was in Germany.

Good idea to go abstract, that helps to make it up in your mind...

You can do abstract so well Elizabeth. I tend to be more literal or symbolic but not abstract. I love seeing all these pieces and getting inspired. And that mural by Miro is amazing. Wichita State is lucky to have such a fabulous piece of art. Thanks for showing it and explaining about the refurbishing. It is worth it to keep it like new. Hope you have a great Thursday. Hugs Erika

So many wonderful pieces ~ I love the mug and I definitely see the eye, actually I see a side profile of a black dog. The mosaic restoration was interesting and quite the project to complete it sounds like. Enjoy your day!

Sorry to say it , but Bleubeard is so wrong - your abstracts are great...not as great as that fabulous Miro mural, but I enjoyed seeing them!
The day of the Twin Towers destruction is one that will stay in many memories - the staff in our school gathered in the hall, after the children went home, to watch on the big TV there and it just seemed unreal and many of us were crying. Such brave folk around on that day!

Have a lovely day,
Chrisx

You definitely have an abstract mind. I say this affectionately of course. Your work is fabulously wonderful. I admire someone as yourself who can tap into this side of art. It's quite interesting. The abstract with the subtle colors would be great to use as an overlay in photo play. Sometimes I'll look for free resources to do crazy things with photographs. "Cat Fight' is purrfectly named and the colors are well suited for the piece. I looked for the ears but I'm not sure that I spotted them, though. However, I did see the eye in your "The Eye" painting. Again, your colors are spot on with this art piece. Thanks for sharing the workings of your artistic mind. I can honestly say, mine doesn't work this way but I wish it did a little. Have a paintastic day!

These all fit the bill of abstract! I was really taken with your color-block looking one from 2019, I think you said. And of course the mural/sculpture. To answer your questions on the masks: 1) the bead is not uncomfortable at all- hardly know it's there. 2) I wear sunglasses and the bead is behind the ear enough so that there is no interference. The bead on t-shirt tie is the style I wear the most.

Well, you are indeed drawn to abstracts, not only in looking at them, appreciating them, drawing from them, but also in creating them. Your tribute to the Twin Towers is wonderful. We all remember where we were on that day and everyone in our country and many around the world were crying. I was watching TV when the news broke in with a picture of the smoke coming out of the first building ... I will never forget that day.
The other one that caught my attention was "The Eye". Yes, I see the Eye and probably at least 15 other eyes and faces. This is the kind of abstract that I love because it takes me to many different places. As for Miro ... we have Miro art work in the Chicago Art Museum. He may be the first abstract painter I really liked, so we have that in common. Love this post Elizabeth and so glad that Bleubeard was not involved in the scuffle because, as with the eye, I see more than two cats and they are indeed in a fight :) Have a great week and cuddle with your babies ... they are always so loving :)

Abstract art isn't always my thing but you have several here -- more than several - that really speak to me (especially your first yellow!) But beautiful purples and blues. Very lovely work, Elizabeth. And I really loved seeing the Miro. I DO like him and it's exciting to have one of his right in your own town. Thanks for his background, too.

Nelly my sweet! It has been a while for me and shame on me!! I love the first one with the striking purple colour. The one doe. With the fan brush is one I really love with the deep colours and I can really see you work with it and make a card or an art piece with that as a background d but even if you just frame it, I think it’s grand as are the others you created here. The Two Towers is a tribute and needs to be looked at as not just someth8 g sad but something tha5 was grand for so many years. I love the one with the coffee cup too. I don’t know why but with the black line dripping down kind of reminds me of my hubby’s mood before his first cup of coffee. I am glad they are restoring the art piece by Miro

A really brilliant post on the subject of abstract art. Your pieces are amazing - so glad I got to see them, as I wasn't on board with you and Bleubeard yet for lots of them. Dreamland and Cat Fight are sensational. Dreamland for the softly swirling colours - definitely dreamy. And Cat Fight is absolutely my definition of abstract - it captures the essence of the fight perfectly - a whirl of movement and dynamism and awkward twists and turns and flying ginger fur. Love, love, love it.

I also completely agree about the Wichita Museum piece - that is stunning.

Beautiful pieces! Especially love the circle. Not sure why, but it speaks to me.

To answer your question, NO I don´t like humidity! It makes my skin feel slippery, it is disgusting.

My favorite of your art today are "Day on the Water."

Rain said...

LOL Elizabeth, I can say YES I do love humidity without sarcasm! Hee hee, I know most people will be giving me the evil eye as I state that! I think it's because of the long winters, ANY type of hot weather suits me! :) "Running in Circles" is wonderfully abstract! Love it! :) Your "Day on the Water" is neat...I saw the sailboat right away, but then I also see a face. Very cool. I love the colours in "Cat Fight"...Elizabeth I tried, but I can't see the cat ears! Despite the fact that you didn't like the fan brush, my gosh that piece is lovely! Thanks for sharing the art at the museum! I love museums, but don't get around to visiting them much! Oh that "Focus" is fabulous!!! :)
