T Stands For City Bites

One Sunday while the youngsters were visiting, we went looking for the Art Park, first mentioned by my friend and T Tuesday participant Foxy Stamping Sharon.  If you missed her post about the park, you can find it here

My foodie friend Sally thought she knew where it was and gave me vague directions to find it.  After searching for, and not finding the park, the youngsters and I decided to put it on the list of things to find next year.  BTW, Sharon has given me the address of the Art Park, so I will probably check it out prior to the youngsters return next summer.

Since we were on the northeast side of town, I thought City Bites might be a good place to stop for a late lunch.

I remembered going to City Bites when I was in grad school and a few of us went over our lunch hour one time.   Somehow this didn't look the same, though.

I even thought the location was further south than it was.

The owner and I got to talking and I told him how I thought I had been here before, but I was sure it was at a different location.  He told me I wasn't dreaming, and they had moved to their new location after I graduated from Wichita State.  We both agreed this restaurant was nothing like the previous one.

The youngsters have always been respectful of the fact I don't like to pay for soft drinks, coffee, or tea, when we can get those cheaper at home.  They always order water, as do I.  I waited at the table while they filled their cups with water.  They offered to get my water, but I said I wanted to take a photo of my cup before they all joined me at the table.  I knew it would be hard to keep three energetic kiddos out of the picture unless I did it this way.

I ordered the Veggie.  We all got the large sandwiches.  This is just half.  They wrapped our second halves to take home.  Half of my sandwich was made with wheat berry bread, while the other half was bread using sun-dried tomato.  The reason I was able to pick two types of bread was because they only had enough of the sun-dried tomato for a half sandwich.  After all, it was nearly closing time for them.

In case you are wondering what is on the cup, it is explained in the brochures we picked up.  In their quest for a better burger, they named it The Cow Calf-Hay.

My Veggie consisted of avocado, alfalfa, sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, black olives, crushed cherry peppers, and homemade ranch dressing I had them leave on the side.  Although the sandwiches were expensive ($10.00 USD each for the cold sandwiches), we got two meals from them.  I swear, I don't know how parents are able to take their children out to eat.  This sandwich adventure cost me over $42.00 (USD, which included tax).  It would have been over $50.00 (USD) had we ordered drinks other than tap water.

I also wanted to share this postcard I received over the weekend.  Bet you know who sent it to me.  At least you know if you were here last week for T.  One guess and it begins with H!

It's now time for you to share your own drink related post.  It can be gifts you received, photos, a place you visited, movies, postcards, mail art, junk mail, books, sketches, mixed media, drawings, paintings, tags, scrapbooking, or other art that is digital, hybrid, or traditional, as long as it in some way relates back to a drink, any drink.  Regardless, please share below and Bleubeard and I, along with the rest of the T gang will be by to visit.   Please link only your T post and not your blog in general.  Old photos are acceptable because they may be taken any time, not just on Tuesday and not just this year.

Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention this is the final T post in August, so please don't forget to dig up your Second on the 2nd, a post that can be about anything as long as it is one you have published in the past.

That looks like a good place for a sandwich, but it's rather pricey, that's true. Here you have to pay for water and they only serve mineral water, never tap water, and it costs as much as beer or coffee. I always wonder about all the families here out for meals, it must cost a fortune. Happy T Day, Valerie

The sandwich might be a bit expensive, but it looks delicious. The restaurant looks quirky and fun, too. Wonderful happy mail. Happy T Day

Your sandwich looks yummy Elizabeth. Given the huge variety of breads available today, I like the half and half bread idea. When I was a kid, that would have meant Wonder Bread on one half and Wonder Bread on the other half.

Happy T-day! Eileen xx

Oh, I forgot about City Bites! A close friend took me there years ago! I had forgotten about it! Your sandwich sounds so delightful! I may just have to go there! Thanks for the plug to my blog about the Art Park. After I found it, I took my husband, and that is when I took the photos. I have never been by there since! It is just not a way I ever go. I only found it the first time because I was lost! LOL.
Happy T Day, early, Elizabeth!

I know I am due a BIG catchup but for now I am stopping after I have done this - it's getting late! That sandwich does look good and hearty but what price!!! It is big and I can see why you couldn't manage all of it! City Bites look an interesting place to visit - I am guessing you won't be going too often! Happy T Day! Chrisx

Being housebound for 15 years I have little idea what meals cost at restaurants or even fast food these days. Probably a good thing. ;)

Sounds like you had fun with them, though. :)

I love a good veggie sandwich on a sub roll. And that looks like a good one. And I like how you got 2 meals out of it. I often do that when we get sub sandwiches. We often get ours at our local grocery store which makes pretty good sandwiches and has a good price. I could go for one right now since the hubby worked late and I had an English muffin for dinner. Not very exciting. Hope it is a super T day. hugs-Erika

Your veggie sandwich really sounded delicious-and I was glad to read that I am not the only one that does not add to the tab with a beverage-we always ordered water or sometimes Hubs would get a cup of coffee-especially with several people at the table it is amazing how much that adds to the bill.
Thanks for sharing another day out with the children-Happy T wishes Kathy

Your veggie sandwich sound absolutely delish!! And I sure wouldn't mind paying $10 for two meals:) Hubby and I often say too that we don't know how average families with several children can afford to go out to eat at a decent place. I'm sure the children appreciated everything you've done for them. Happy T day!

Eating out is expensive. We do it more than we should now that I've returned to work. I should say that we get takeout...not eat in. At least we don't pay for drinks then.
Glad you got the postcard. Did you notice it was mailed from Yellowstone. They had a mail drop box in the Yellowstone Inn and I had your address in my phone. :)
Happy T day!

Your sandwich looks yummy and City Bites looks like a very interesting place to eat. The decor is intriguing. I know what you mean about the expense of eating out. We rarely take our family of 5 out to eat. Eating at a fast food franchise is about $40-45 and a nice sit down restaurant is $60-70.
Happy Tea Day,
Kate

Wow, the sandwich looks enormous and delicious. It was good that it served you twice and you got half to take out. It probably would have been expensive here, especially related to its size. The youngsters sound like good company and appreciate you taking them out to eat.
My family grew up having picnics, it was a very very rare occasion if we took them somewhere to eat when they were little.
How time change we just couldn't have afforded to go to restaurants back then.
Happy T day wishes Elizabeth.

Your sandwich looks so yummy and I love the street sign in the shop - fabulous! Have prices gone up in the US? When I visited the US last year I was surprised at the price of things (compared to 4-5 years ago when we visited last) and I was amazed at the fact a lot of items are cheaper in the UK now 😁. Glad you had a good time with the kids and wishing you a very happy T Day! Hugs, Jo x

You have good memory Elizabeth to remember the restaurant and its location.
I would have enjoyed the sun-dried tomato bread.

I love the decor at this sandwich shop, and the food looks tasty. I saw a menu for a 70s-era McDonald's recently with a comparison of what percentage of your hourly pay it took then as compared to their prices and the wages now. Not only is everything more expensive, the prices have outpaced wages by a _lot_! We used to go to kids-eat-free nights when the kids were little. We don't eat out all that much and never did.

Happy T Tuesday!

I need to go back and catch up on your adventure with kids. Meanwhile your sandwich looks and sounds so good. It is always nice to bring half home for a second meal.

I bet the kids loved City Bites. I sure would. That sandwich looks yummy.

Yes, eating out is expensive when you are with kids. The sandwich looks really yummie, but if it was worth 10$ I don’t know. But I’m sure the children enjoyed eating out for a change and it was a (two day) treat. We are so lucky that we live in an area where eating out is really cheap. We can afford to eat out once or twice a week. And of course the wine is cheap too.
Halle card is lovely. It’s so nice that she thought of you and sent you a card.
Happy T- Day,
Lisca

I like the decor in the restaurant, especially the rhino. (Hopefully they don't intend it as a hunter's trophy mounted on the wall, and instead it's a rhino charging out of the wall.) The food looks delicious, even though those sandwich prices are on the high side. Whenever I go out to eat anywhere, I always get water. I agree with you about the exorbitant prices they charge for soda. I don't know how anyone can afford a lot of things these days: in CT, we're at the bottom of the list of US states for pay raises over the past few years, while the prices of everything else have increased, including dramatic jumps in healthcare plan monthly payments. I like the postcard you received, and I know who sent it. :-) Happy T-Day! (Sorry for being late.)

OOhh I think I would like those veggie sandwiches Elizabeth !! You could taste both kind of bread, that´s super. This is a very nice place, i love your postcard. I´m sorry I couldn´t post for T-day this week, because I went to visit my aunt who is ill, with my brother and my mother, far from my town, and, when we came back, I was very tired, but I want to see what to do for next week. I wish all is well for your, and hope your weekend will be very nice, I send you big hugsss
