T Stands For El Agave

Back in December before Christmas, my foodie friend Sally and I wandered to the east side of town, where we found

this Mexican restaurant called El Agave.

I was sure this was going to be my very favorite Mexican restaurant because they offered vegetarian specials.

Then I noticed this, where I could get a cheese chili relleno, and another cheese filled item of my choice.  I was so happy, I immediately knew what I wanted, while Sally looked over the entire menu.

I was glad because it gave me a chance to photograph the menu.

I know several of my T Tuesday friends like margaritas, so instead of drooling over the flan,

I chose to share the prices of these.  I have no idea if these are good prices or not, since I don't consume alcohol.  However, if I did, it would be at home and not when I had to travel on icy streets.

You can tell it's right before Christmas, because of the stockings and the tree.

There were several rooms, but I was interested in the chairs and booths that reminded me of Reyes, the restaurant that caught fire and one of the sisters who ran it died, while the other is still in a burn unit out of town.

I had to be very careful, because there were other people scattered throughout the restaurant.

This room was roped off because it appeared the staff was working back there.  I suspected it would be open if and when the restaurant got really busy later that Saturday night.

Then came the food.  But wait!  This is the second plate, because the first plate was covered in this HOT, HOT red sauce.  Everything was drenched swimming in it except the rice.   The waitress didn't understand me when I asked her to take it back and get me a plate without the red sauce.  She had to get someone who spoke English to help me.  However, when I asked if I could at least keep the rice (the only thing not covered in sauce), since I eat so slowly, the lady said NO, very emphatically and resoundingly.

By this time, Sally was over half finished with her food and I had totally lost my appetite.  When I asked for more water and a to-go box, all I got was the box and a bill for the food.   I was surprised they didn't charge me for two portions at that point.  Yes, I was very disheartened and it will be an even colder day than the one we spent at El Agave before anyone will convince me to go back.

It's now time for you to share your own drink related post.  It can be gifts you received, photos, a place you visited, movies, postcards, books, sketches, mixed media, drawings, paintings, tags, scrapbooking, or other art that is digital, hybrid, or traditional, as long as it in some way relates back to a drink, any drink.  Regardless, please share below and Bleubeard and I, along with the rest of the T gang will be by to visit.   Please link only your T post and not your blog in general.  Old photos are acceptable because they may be taken any time, not just on Tuesday and not just this year.

Before I forget, it's time to dig up your second on the 2nd.  This is a monthly meme where you share a post you have previously published.  It can be anything, any length, any genre, just as long as you've shown it on your blog sometime in the past.

It looks such a pretty place with those beautiful chairs, so it's a pity you weren't happy with the food or the service. Happy T day, and hope you are now really better, Valerie

Well all the photos looked lovely and those chairs had amazing decorative panels. However I i read all you post I can see how this wasn't a good destination for you. The meal problem and the none English speaking staff must have been very difficult for you. I can understand you not wanting to go back there.
Happy T day wishes Elizabeth, I hope you are feeling much better this week.

What a very colorful place, I love all those chairs....so cheery!
The communication problem we have here quite often, and so sad that it is only going to get worse. BUT your food DID look good!
Happy T-day

This looked like such a wonderful restaurant, great food, and I love the decor and those chairs are amazing. We do not go out to eat much any more, but we never order a drink out-they are too expensive and then someone can't drink and drive-so we just have a drink at home.
I am so sorry you got bad service-that sounded really bad too for sure I would not leave a tip lol
Happy T Hugs

That restaurant really did look good. The chairs are very colourful and I would have thought: unique.
The menu looks interesting. I have no idea of prices of course as we don't have coctails here. (Only in coctail bars which there will be in the big cities, but i have never been to one.)
I have never had Mexican food except at the house of our Mexican friends. I must admit your plate does not look look very appetising. I showed my hubby and I can't repeat what he said. It sounded like baby cr...
I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, and added to that the language problem. Not nice.
Happy T-Day,
Lisca

I liked the chair decor. It's a shame you had a bad experience. But I would feel the same way: I wouldn't go back after that. I have a "ban" list for restaurants that I have banned for various reasons, and will never go back to. One closed a few months ago, so when the new restaurant that's going in it's place opens, I'll give it a try. Happy T-Day!

Your pictures of the restaurant remind me of a Mexican restaurant that hubby and I visited when we were in Lancaster, Pa. The booths were exactly the same way along the wall. Also, artwork on the chairs was similar and the food was excellent. I am sorry that you had a bad experience with the food. Having to wait while they correct your order certainly ruins the experience and I can see why you would never want to go back.

Happy Tea Day,
Kate

That's no good that your meal was not good. I know I've said it before but I LOVE Mexican food! If I wasn't so full from supper I'd be very jealous of your meal. :)
HAppy T day!

sorry you had such a disappointing visit to this restaurant. the chairs look fab!
the building you mention in the photo, is the one opposite the Palm House pond, it has featured often in my pictures of the pond with reflections. it contains a fairly newly opened restaurant and on the upper floors, I believe, some of the student study areas; Kew being a place of scientific study as well as horticultural study. thanks for the interest

What a rotten experience after your initial excitement at the menu! The decor looked great too - pity it didn't match the food and the staff! Happy T day, Chrisx

Too bad you had such a bad experience. I loved the painted chairs. I don't think I've ever seen anything like that at any restaurant I've been to.

Hi Elizabeth, the restaurant looks great, I love those painted chairs, it looks very authentic, must admit I hate really spicy foods that burn your mouth, I always find those giant burritos too much so I'm usually boring and end up having a quesadilla. I think that's how you spell it,
Have a great week

The chairs really interested me, I looked at each and ever one you showed us. The food on the other hand - no. We have so many choices of places for Mexican food here and I've never had bad service or food in any of them. Hope the next place you and Sally visit does better.

Mexican is always a good choice - yum! It looks like such a great place so it was a shame the food and service let it down. Those chairs are just gorgeous and I bet it has a lovely atmosphere when it's crowded 😁. Wishing you a very happy T Tuesday! J 😊 x

What attractive decor and decorations! It's a shame their attention to customer service wasn't up to their attention to their physical space :( Happy T Tuesday!

Thank you for sharing your visit to El Agave, Elizabeth. You can only imagine how much I enjoyed seeing such an authentic piece of Mexico in Wichita! tequila, Jalisco (the state where we live) is the birthplace of tequila. Agave plants are ubiquitous. For example, the major glorietas (roundabouts) in Guadalajara are planted with decorative agave. It's a matter of pride. Excellent margaritas here cost about $2 US.

The hand Painted furniture really caught my eye. We've been to Patzcuaro, Michoacan where this art form began and had the privalege of touring the workshop and watch award winning artists at work. Living here day by day, I sometimes lose sight of the beauty, talent and pride of place in this part of Mexico. I wish I had taken more photos. But we did our site seeing in our early years here - before digital cameras.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience, but I really enjoyed this post.

Happy T-day! Eileen xx

Hi Elizabeth! Thank you for your sweet comments left on my blog. Glorious heart sewn gifts in your post before this one and I'm an arthritis sufferer, too - I have 5 forms of it that my art therapy helps me forget. Love your handmade lovelies all lined up like you have photographed them. And being a Texan, oh my, that Mexican restaurant's chairs are mucho amazing!!!! I must confess I drooled over that plate of food. Chili Relleno is one of my faves! I'm so so sorry that the red sauce and lack of communication spoiled what would have otherwise been heaven. Nobody wants red sauce all over everything! What were they thinking? But then, had it been green avocado sauce, I might have been happy, hahaha. Hope you get a future Mexican food feast you will enjoy, xoxoxo

Wow! Such a bright and festive artwork, yet overall poor customer service, and my goodness, I don't blame for not going back one bit. What a bummer! I sure hope you're feeling better as we get ready to head into a new month. Hugs...RO
