Tree Hugger

Many of you are probably aware that Alison, aka Craftytrog's Arty Adventures, is our host this month at Art Journal Journey.  Her theme is Geometric Shapes and she has asked us to make any art we like as long as it leads to something geometric.

To be honest, this is NOT what I would have named this entry, but

after seeing this phrase Tree Hugger on this paint chip sample, I knew I had to use it.

Several of my internet friends create blobs to represent snow.  Somehow, the concept seems to elude me!

Instead I get large blobs of paint.  You just have to pretend they are snow, something I often ask of you (to pretend, that is).

For this page, I first ran a green dye ink pad over the background of white 110 lb. cardstock.  Then I used some of the excess paint chips I had left over from my Christmas tip-ins.  I cut them into triangles using my deckle scissors and affixed them to the page using white (PVA) glue.  Finally, I attempted to use a paint brush like Seth Apter showed in one of his DVDs how to create the snow.  I think my paint was a bit too thick, though.

Thanks for visiting and thanks for your support and kind remarks of my use of geometric shapes this month.  I hope to see you at Art Journal Journey, too.  We'd love to have you join us.

The composition of your cutted out trees is gorgeous! I love your snow drops, because there I see "real" snow like I see by looking out my window!
Wish you a happy day! Rike xx

You had such a fabulous idea today also. I love these trees. I love how you used the paint cards. How do you keep thinking of these cool geometric shape ideas? Its fascinating how our brains all work differently. I am having a hard time coming up with ideas other than some random shapes and you've had some great shape images. Smile. Hope your Wednesday is a good day. Snow and tricky driving for me. Hugs-Erika

This is great Elizabeth. I knew it was snow right away. Here on the West Coast (or the Wet Coast as some people call it), our snow is often big, wet and blobby. We also have lots of “tree huggers” - an expression often used to describe someone who opposes the logging industry which is likely our biggest natural resource based industry. So this is a very West Coast card, and I love it!

Oh I am in love with your trees-very nicely done
I was gone most of yesterday so got caught up with replies this morning. I was glad to read that most do not need to pay for their library card. In Illinois it was very expensive over 100.00 for each of us for one year. My Mom loved to read and she lived on the family farm-the city closest to her had an excellent library but was very costly as well-so she found out if she volunteered for so many hours a week she could get a free card-so that was nice.
we are learning about how the people before us who built this home 40 years ago did not know anything about construction-including where to put those heat vents-that was crazy-the electric is really bad in his house too. and to fix the water issue is turning into a big job as well-but we did find a good laborer to help us at an affordable price Hubs has the knowledge but not the health any more.
so I am guessing use crayons for the batiks-that the colors stay behind after all the wax is removed? that sounds like a fun project
enjoy your day

A perfect name for your page. I love your forest. And that looks like the kind of snow we get blizzard snow. 2 inches per hour. Glad it's on your page and not out my window.

I really, really, really like this and I hope next winter I can remember this one because I think these would make GREAT place cards for Christmas dinner! They'd be so easy and they're so cute -- just stand them upright in a cork with the bottom trimmed off or something else -- you'd have to fiddle with it to get them so it doesn't tip from the balance of the height. But you could and I hope I remember to try!

FOUR STAR and it is indeed a great name!

PS -- Snow -- are you using a toothbrush in slightly runny gesso for the snow. You can fling it (messy) or run your fingers over the bristles to spatter. I KNOW you have done this in your other techniques. I'm pretty sure I've seen it. Or spray bottle... The blobs don't have to be big!

So ingenious to use paint chips to make your triangle trees! I love the work of art that you created with them! And I love the paint splats that represent sow.

I guess "fabulous" is my word of the day, Elizabeth, because this page is just
fabulous in its simplicity. The is the best art use of paint chip samples I've seen. Your snow blobs look fine to me - a bit abstract and like snow whirling in a blizzard.

P.S. Maybe I missed it on your blog, but have you received my Christmas card yet? Everyone else has - even in Europe. I would hate to think that you - of all people - didn't get yours.

I appreciate everything you do and am very pleased to know you. Eileen xoxo

This is a very clever and effective page. It got me thinking that one or three of these trees would look good on cards for Christmas. Guess where I will be going before too long? The paint shop for some sample strips.
Love your page and thanks for the inspiration.
