Family at play

As you may know by now, Bleubeard and I are hosting Art Journal Journey this month.  My theme is Count your blessings.  I am also joining the challenge at Try it on Tuesday, where they want you to use book pages, newspapers, magazine images, etc.  Granted, there are no book pages or newspapers in this entry, but there is a sheet of old telephone book page.

I believe family time is important.  I also believe my family and this family may not look like yours.

Regardless, they are a family, and a family at play.  Too bad I smeared the words before they were dry.

My goal was to leave as much of the background as possible, so two red rectangles that matched the heavy card stock I used for the sentiment, were the only embellishments.

The focal image was cut from a decade old Dover publication, more than likely out of print.

I felt the lacy embellishment still allowed the background to show through.

Originally white,

I gave it a bit of color using dye ink.

I'm sure you can tell this is a resist technique, where I placed Vaseline/petroleum jelly on parts of the telephone book page.  I then painted the entire page with red acrylic paint.  I allowed the red paint to dry, then added Vaseline/petroleum jelly in various spots on top of the red paint.  Next, I added yellow acrylic paint and when it was dry, used several baby wipes to remove the Vaseline/petroleum jelly from the page.

Materials used include a page from a phone book, two colors of acrylic craft paint, Vaseline/petroleum jelly, three pieces of heavy red card stock, white gel pen, Dover publication image, and white lace colored with red dye ink.

Bleubeard, my adorable co-host and I are thrilled you joined us today as we have been blessed with family play time which we are sharing at Art Journal Journey as well as Try it on Tuesday where we created art using a page from an old phone book.  We hope to see you both places, too.

This background is simply wonderful! A fabulous result of peeled paint! And I love how much you let us still see from the background with the just few great touches you added! Blessed are the artists and crafters like you, as their soul can freely play - like this cat family playing as focal image! Gorgeous entry for your theme! Bleubeard has inspired this really well, hugs, to him and hugs to you - and don't forget to hug Squiggles as well!
We are just so happy - we got the results at the Vet today that this cancer was a bening tumor. That are really good news.

Hugs, Susi

I can so relate to this Elizabeth understanding your play on words perfectly, Family means the world to me but it does not always mean those that are close or related. A beautiful page using the book pages, so glad you left a little of it for us to see.
Wishing you a super weekend, creative wishes Tracey xx

I like your handwritten sentiment in contrast with the print on the page. Sweet image of cat and kitten. Brings back happy memories of Baby Ink playing with his tail.

I really love this one, Elizabeth! I’m also noticing the things you use like Vaseline! Who would have thought?! Thank you for your note about my blog and commenting being wacky. I’ve tweaked a few settings, hope it works now. Please test it for me, thanks!

Great page and I do like your family. I don't think there is a set definition for family anymore, and as long as society recognizes that pets are family, I think we are OK. My dogs are certainly my family too. I like the resist technique (haven't done that in awhile-I think I need to play with that) and how you added some lace. Happy Friday. Hugs-Erika

This is a wonderful use for those old phone books! The paper is thinner than much of the book paper I see, and I'd have an easier time tearing out pages from an old phone book. Even useless old, outdated textbooks are hard for me to tear up lol

I think this is a sweet little family :)

Love your journal page and all the elements used. I found the vaseline jelly interesting, I have never tried that before, but your results are fabulous and your subject (Bleubeard) made for the perfect journal page! I am working on journal pages this weekend, I am going to play around with the vaseline and see what happens!

Oh wow, I love the theme of this page and the feline family at play.
The background peeled paints colour looks fantastic and I love the added lace.
I totally agree that our animals are part of our family, I've said this many times that the love and companionship they give is remarkable.
Thank you so much for sharing this with us at TioT's as well,.
I'm glad your surprise packet arrived and I think you guessed who I begged your address from, so I hope you will forgive us both.

Of course you know why I adore this! Love the cat image. In a way, it reminds me of Lizzie -- not quiet but close enough!

and belated thanks for all the nice words you write on my posts which make my head swell very large indeed. (Especially on the Paris b/w post!) Your words are SO, so appreciated!
