Bitten!

Today I'm joining host Rike of Rike's Art with another journal page at Art Journal Journey.  Rike's theme is Animals A to Z.

Today I'm showcasing the Vampire Bat.   They are the only mammals that fly and the only ones that survive on blood.  If they can't find blood two nights in a row, they will die.

I have to admit, this is an ugly creature.   I was thrilled when I found this definition, though.

It definitely has a face only a mother could love.   Unlike some other species of bats, vampire bats can walk, run, and jump.

It lives mostly in dark caves, mines, tree hollows, and abandoned buildings in Mexico, as well as Central and South America.  The vampire bat feeds on the flesh of cattle and sheep.

Rather than sucking blood, vampire bats make a small cut with their teeth and then lap up the flowing blood with their tongues. These bats are so light and agile they are sometimes able to drink blood from an animal for more than 30 minutes without waking it. The blood sucking does not hurt the animal, although there is always the problem of the bat having and spreading rabies.

I found these images in an animal book and studied the focal bat.  I tried to make my background resemble the caves they might live in.  This was created in my large art journal.

Thanks for joining me today at Art Journal Journey.  And thanks for visiting and being supportive of my art.

Now this is one animal I don't want to meet. I like watching bats swooping about at twilight but the ones here are harmless. At least I hope so! But this little nasty one made a great page! Have a nice day, hugs, Valerie

You wrote the right words: It definitely has a face only a mother could love.
To read about the vampire bat was now very interesting for me (vampire - they really lives). It is a good idea to show animals which are not cute and we do not want to caress, but they are a part of our world.
Thank you for such an outstanding entry linked to my theme at Art Journal Journey!
Wish you a good weekend (without vampire bats) :))

Oh, I would be staying well away from this little creature, he sure has an unlikable set of features. Your post was really interesting to read and the page looks fantastic, its a super cave like background .

While you did a wonderful job with the theme, this mother doesn't love that little face. The thought of them is the stuff of nightmares and horror movies.

Fascinating, Elizabeth. We have lots of bats in our area of Mexico. I sure hope they're not vampire bats. Ugly and fearsome indeed!

Interesting, but bats are just so scary. The post office did bat stamps years ago? I used them for paying bills🦇📬😉

Uh...this is a big fat no, Elizabeth!(lol) But it does remind me of when I was in the Air Force in North Dakota, and this guy I worked with put a dead one on our boss's window. He thought it was alive, and it shut down work for several hours. When he realized it was dead and he was joked, he laughed, but we all got in trouble because of the time lost form work. (lol)Happy Saturday!!! Hugs...RO

I like bats, but the ones around here are encouraged because they eat insects. People even put up bat houses.

not looking at the bats... just came to say, you're probably right about it being a water buffalo....

Those teeth really give them a scary look. We once had a bat in the house that flew in when I opened the door to let the dog out. We managed to get it closed into my daughter's room so we could go get a fishing net to scoop it up and let it back outside. When I came back it was crawling out from under the door and then took off back into the rest of the house. I tell you it was quite the chore to let him back out. I actually like bats but that crawling under the door freaked me out a bit because I didn't know bats could do that. Interesting page, even if those guys have scary teeth. Hugs-Erika

Well that's got me woken up! We were on the move yesterday and in and out of connection areas while I was trying to catch up - we are at our caravan for a few days -normally we go home on Sundays or Mondays but there is a very interesting workshop I am attending on Wednesday! It felt strange travelling up on a Saturday!I have never really thought about vampire bats (?!?!) but they are quite interesting creatures so Thanks for this dear Elizabeth! Chrisx

I think I'll give this one a pass, Elizabeth! Mice, OK. Rats, not so good but OK. I draw the line at bats and snakes -- especially ones with TEETH!!! Kudos to you for doing art work with one of these fellows!
