Baby It's Cold Outside

I wasn't sure this post was going to happen, because my internet has been offline since early this morning.  I finally broke down and contacted my internet provider (AT&T) and they got me back online in time to create this post.

I'm once again joining Chris from PearShapedCrafting, this month's host at Art Journal Journey with her theme of 101 Ways to Stay Warm.

I decided to scan the background and words before I added anything else to this page, which I'm sure some of you will recognize as one of the used file folders I colored as part of my Second Thursday tutorial.

Baby, It's Cold Outside!

(I really can't stay) But, baby, it's cold outside
(I've got to go away) But, baby, it's cold outside
(This evening has been) Been hoping that you'd drop in
(So very nice) I'll hold your hands they're just like ice

(I simply must go) Baby, it's cold outside
(The answer is no) Baby, it's cold outside
(The welcome has been) How lucky that you dropped in
(So nice and warm) Look out the window at the storm

(I got to get home) But, baby, you'd freeze out there
(Say lend me a coat) It's up to your knees out there
(You've really been grand) I thrill when you touch my hand
(But don't you see) How can you do this thing to me

(There's bound to be talk tomorrow) Think of my life long sorrow
(At least there will be plenty implied) If you caught pneumonia and died
(I really can't stay) Get over that old doubt
[Both] Baby, it's cold
[Both] Baby, it's cold outside

This song is apparently attributed to Dean Martin, but it sounds like the man is more of a leech than someone willing to take his date home before the snow gets too deep.  And I hate to say it, but that type of behavior seems to be systemic today, especially with all the allegations being cast in the direction of both famous (like the U.S. President) and the not quite so famous (like Kevin Spacey).  So, I tried to give it a more baby like and warmer feel.

This is MY take on "Baby, It's Cold Outside."

All decorations,

with a few exceptions,

began life

as buttons.

In order to remove the backs, I used nail clippers.

The ones obviously not buttons were strung on a piece of dark green fiber.

Before you accuse me of going over to the "cutesy" side of the mixed media spectrum, please be aware, I found these when I was cleaning my basement after the flood I had last year.  I had so many of these buttons but I knew feared I wouldn't use them for anything mixed media.  I decided to save them until just the right spread came along.  And it finally did!  Of course, my substrate was a used file folder colored with dye ink.

This is Day 20 of AEDM, we are 2/3 of the way through this month, and I created a spread for Chris's theme at Art Journal Journey.  Hope to see you both places.   I am most grateful that you visited today and am always thrilled by the lovely comments you leave.  I'm also thankful I'm finally back online!

I also like the softer take on this song Elizabeth and a good use of all those cute buttons.
It's shocking to hear these allegations about famous and not so famous people.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Brilliant take on the song - yes the words do seem to indicate that the female singer is being put under pressure instead of being listened to!Your page is fabulous - gorgeous colours and those buttons and 'baby bunting! Have a great week! Hugs, Chrisx

What a good use of all the baby charms and buttons! Very well done! I like your special take on the song - and no - I am sure you will never go over to the cutesy mixed media spectrum...lol!
Thank you for this great idea to make the song a softer version....
Happy start of the new week - good that you have inet again - always such an annoying situation for us bloggers.

Those buttons are great. Good you were able to save them after the flood. As to the pressure message in the song, nothing new in the battle of the sexes. Happily, attitudes are changing as women begin to stand up for themselves. And so she persisted.

That's a really clever take on that song. The baby theme looks great on your beautiful splashy background. Nice job. It's also a very clever idea for Chris' challenge. :) Keeping this short as I need to go get ready for work. Hugs-Erika

I love this song and feel like it has gotten a bad rap in the past year or so about trying to convince her to stay. I remember hearing this argument last year but I don't agree. Who wouldn't try to convince someone they wanted to stay? It's not like he's putting a gun to her head or telling her that her job is on the line. It's a date! And that story has worked both ways, too, when the woman is taken home, offers a nightcap. Sometimes I think we go too deep and overthink it. While I'm as appalled at the recent allegations as anyone else I think going after holiday songs is looking for something that isn't there.

That said, I love your interpretation and it's really a cute layout -- especially with the fun buttons and colors!

I love the way you’ve interpreted this. The baby theme is funny but very fitting. Probably not quite white the writer imagined, but I much prefer your version.

Somebody needs to save that date-rapey song, and I'm glad you stepped up. Honestly: I really must go, the answer is no, say what's in this drink?? Really? What were they thinking? :(

Those buttons are adorable.

What an adorable page, Elizabeth! I Love all the dimensional embellishments and that you created it around tiny babies - not the other kind in the song. I do like the song though ;-)

I was warmed by the fantastic colour in your first photo, almost enough on its own to be entered for Chris's theme.
I always like this song, the way it is sung and the music, and think of it as belonging to a more innocent age.
That's amusing how you have turned it into a real Baby song with all the baby trinket attachments. Sometimes I think we should never throw anything out as it might come in useful (spoken by a minimalist).

This is a wonderful page, its a well known song and I really love how you used the baby charms to decorate the page. Fantastic. I didn't think for one moment that you had gone cutie.

love the softness of it very much. I agree with you Elizabeth!
He is totally a leech!
Every time the song has come on, I get so angry.
My daughter changes it when it starts because I usually start up!
lol
what you have done here has made me see it differently and I thank you for that:)

Wonderful warm background for your changing the song into a good one by giving it a more baby like and warmer feel!
