Homage to the old school desk

Today we are paying homage to the old school desks.

I felt like I was dreaming when Valerie showed the same style desk a couple of days ago.  And we need to remember that these desks used to be in nearly every classroom.

Seems many people remember these desks,

especially when prompted to remember

a few of the specifics.  The reason I know about these desks is because I purchased one in perfect condition at an estate sale one year.

And because my journal is too large for my scanner, here are the relevant parts of both sides.

Materials used on the left include an image from the internet, sheet music, variegated thread, and a 3-D image sewn to a sheet of glittery scrapbook paper.

Materials used on the right side, include pink stick-on embellishments, computer generated text surrounded by pink ink, sheet music, and a part of a pink tape measure glued to more of the glittery scrapbook paper.

Bleubeard and I are delighted you joined us today when we paid homage to these old school desks, and hope you will join us at Art Journal Journey where we're celebrating all things Back to School.

What a lovely way to remember those beautiful desks. We had them in all classes at junior school, and later at the Grammar school just in a few, but we liked them. In junior school I was ink monitor and had to go round each day to fill up the ink wells on those desks! Thanks for another great page for AJJ! Hugs, Valerie

I do remember school desks attached to the seat behind.. but ours weren't as elaborate or ornate.

No, Mr Pear Shaped stayed outside, but it was great to catch up with Chris again. The show is probably as big as ever, but lots of the stands don't appeal to me so I spend more time at the ones I like, and didn't get a shot of the rest of the hall, it really is huge.

Very beautiful desks. Ours were the same style but not with the wrought ironwork. We used to take tins of polish to school to make them look amazing. I liked the way they had all sorts of strange markings on them from the years and years of use.

Love Chrissie xx

I don't remember these when I was in school but my grandmother had one in her home and it now lives in my home.

I have always loved it and am so happy to own it.

Nice homage to school desks. I wish the ones in my room were bolted to the floor so I didn't have to rearrange them every afternoon when the last kids leave. For some reason they always move closer to the front, but I think the kids push the desks forward rather than moving their chairs backwards to get up. But these old desks are so much prettier than the ones now, made of weird materials so its hard to carve into them. :) happy Sunday. Hugs-Erika

I've seen desks like these in movies and antique shops. I wonder what it was like learning to use the inkwells.

I remember these desks, and I did see Valarie's post too.
The worst thing was to be writing and the person in front of you got to wiggling......LOL! Our's was a very old school and had not been updated to the times. I was so excited the next year when we finally got desks that stood alone......and not bolted to the floor.

This is a great AJJ entry and brought back some funny memories......did I write on the desk top???? who didn't..LOL!

We've one of the flip up desks from hubbies I led his go school. We had a bench too but someone me stole it from our work lobby a while back. Too sad, I liked it to,put on boots. Maybe I'll fsee no another some day. We used to use the desk for the grandkids to color. They loved it those girls who are now grown up! Fun memories. Really fun page. Xox

Very ornate ironwork on those desks, ours were just plain old wood. In infants school our benches were attached to the desk and flipped back when we stood up. it taught us to be quick as they could really hurt as they moved and to keep our bottoms on the seat and not move in the lesson . Its a fantastic page and another bringer of memories.

I have an old desk in out living room and I keep some of my handmade dolls on the bench. They were pretty desks but to my knowledge not used in my life time. But who can remember back that far!!!
