Returning to my roots to meet a challenge

This is Day 15 of 22 and I'm recycling magazine images, while meeting the Art Journal Journey challenge given by Linda at heARTfully Inspired which is On the Record.   I'm also joining Moo-Mania and More's Music challenge.

Raise your hand if you have lots of magazines lying around.  I'm sure many do.  We try various ways to reduce the piles that we never seem to get rid of.  I've seen people who tear articles, photos, tutorials, etc. out of magazines, then throw the rest of the magazine in the recycle bin.  I've seen people file their magazines in file folders or boxes.  I've seen others buy digital magazines, then turn around and print the magazine using printer paper and ink.  I've seen people pass their out of date magazines to people like me (which is how I get most of my art related  magazines), and I've seen people donate their used magazines to hospital waiting rooms, doctor offices, and the like.  But I seldom see people getting rid of every subscription when it expires.

I haven't ordered a magazine in nearly 12 years, so I know it can be done.  I DO get a few freebie industry related magazines, but they don't have many photos in them other than test equipment, etc.  So when my art friend Kathy brought me a big box of Somerset published magazines a few months back, I was in hog heaven.  Today I'm going to recycle a few pages from a couple of those magazines, along with some vintage sheet music to create this entry.

This spread was created in my Coll-aH-ge Too altered book.  The song title is Pretty Woman and it was recorded by Roy Orbison in 1964.

According to various web sites, it is a rock song.  I really don't remember it (that was before my time), but I somehow thought the genre was country.  Regardless, here is my interpretation of Pretty Woman (who is probably as lonely as whoever is serenading her).

For day 15 of 22 I returned to my paper crafting roots and created a collage from two Art Doll Quarterly magazines, computer generated text, and vintage sheet music.

Thanks for visiting and please also visit both Art Journal Journey and Moo-Mania and More for more music inspired mixed media art.

You're right, i have loads of magazines lying around in piles... I can't bring myself to cut bits out and so keep them whole... great recycling of your gifted copy. Yes, Pretty Woman would be classed as rock (before my time too, just, but have heard it lots of times on the radio; lol)

Love your AJJ & MM&M entry. That sure is one pretty woman you have made there. I remember the song well, too. Great that you got all those magazines to recycle; I get mine from a neighbour, too. Thanks for joining us again at the challenges, Hugs, Valerie

Wow.. great that you got such super old magazines from Kathy. They will come in very handy for future collage projects I think!! There are always such beautiful pictures in that magazines! I use such imagery also as background sometimes - much better than purchased designer paper in my mind.
I don't buy any magazine as well... I get all my inspiration online.
I love your collage to that lovely old song - I heard it often .. a happy song that everybogy MUST like at least people of our age ..lol!!!

Your pretty woman has for sure a very special BEAUTY!!!

Thanks a lot for joining Moo Mania & More and Art Journal Journey even though you are so busy with your month's project right now.

This is a great take on that song. When I first opened the page and glanced at your photo I thought what is this? Did I miss summer and now I get it. I think she is really pretty and a lot of fun too. Happy Friday. I'm excited for a nice weekend and some yard work on tap:) And guess what, I am one of those people who does have even 1 magazine subscription. I do buy some on occasion though, but my favorite way to get them is to pick up the freebies- seeing they usually get chopped up a anyhow. Have a nice day!

Pretty Woman was written and released by Roy Orbison in 1965. He was a traditional country singer with an amazing voice. His range was unbelievable. The song was considered "Country Rock" at the time it was released. One of my favorite songs. your art this week is fantastic and I love your take on it. I no longer have and magazine subscriptions either but have friends who gift me their old ones and a local thrift store sells National Geographic for 10 cents each so I always have lots around . :)

I am raising my hand proudly of my large magazine collection. Magazines are the #1 thing I use in my artwork. I lovingly purchase magazines every week if I find something special. A copy of Russian Vogue will be mine. A copy of French Elle magazine will be mine. :) I love magazines. I would be considered a magazine hoarder. I do use my magazines all the time. I only keep ones that are high fashion or design. I do have subscriptions to my favorites. I always get them frugally. I am so jealous, in a good way, of your recent Somerset magazine pile. I love your collage.

Pretty Woman came out in the late summer of '64, and I remember it playing on the rock stations at the time. Country music was so different back then, honkey-tonk oriented in the extreme. The 1990 movie Pretty Woman used the song, I think, and it's been well-covered through the years -including by Rockapella and The Chipmunks lol Springsteen and Fogerty performed it in 2009 at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame concert. You can't beat the Orbison original, though.

I certainly buy, love and hoard magazines. Many are far too beautiful to throw away, although fortunately their ideas and images go out of date eventually. I won't say how far some of them go back, haha!
So this is a blogpost which really interest me. Actually I could say that about many of your posts, Elizabeth.
Your "pretty woman" is a hoot, but they do say beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
