Recife and Orlinda in Brazil in my 7 Continents Altered Book

Once again I'm joining Art Journal Journey with another entry in my 7 Continents altered book, where the theme for October, chosen by Sheila at Orange Esmeralda, is Architecture.

What I thought was going to be a quick and easy spread that I could turn out in no time, turned into more time than I actually had to offer.

For this spread I started my step outs in the center of the file folder with the central image.  I tried to center it on top of the doily, but got it a bit wonky.   You can see this is an example of the colonial architecture found in some places in Brazil.

Two days ago we were in the southern part of Brazil in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which is along the Green Coast, while Recife and Orlinda are in the north in the state of Pernambuco.

Recife is quite modern and lively.

Calm waters in the bay give it the name "Venice of Brazil."  Although the striped ribbon is meant for Easter, I thought the colors went well with the background.

The second side features Olinda, the city that lies on Recife's northern edge.  These two cities are as different as day and night.  No skyscrapers or glass high-rises in this city.

This city still maintains much of its original splendor.

Colonial churches, museums, and artists colonies abound in this community.

Although many Olinda buildings were originally constructed in the 16th century, only a few remain today.  Most of the surviving buildings date from the 18th century and after. The entire picturesque historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.

This seems like the ideal place to visit, and that may be why tourists prefer to stay in Orlinda and take a day trip to Recife.

One final look at Recife

and Orlinda.  Materials used include a gelli printed used file folder, pictures from various travel brochures, a doily, ribbons, hem tape, and text compiled and printed from the internet.

I'm once again sharing this spread with Art Journal Journey because this architecture is too beautiful to pass up.  Don't forget to visit Art Journal Journey for even more wonderful examples of architecture.  Thanks, too, for your visit, and your continued support of this imaginary journey we are on which has taken us to Brazil at the moment.  You are always very much appreciated.

Wonderful work. You have captured the essence of the place - I can feel it. I live in an old Colonial town in Mexico ... also a UNESCO site. So beautiful to see places preserved and tended to. Enjoyed my visit very much.
