Summer of Color, Week 2: pink, pink, orange

This is Week Two of Summer of Color, or SOC, and the colors Kristin at Twinkle Twinkle Like A Star has chosen for us

are pink, pink, and orange.  I chose another piece from a bed sheet, this one in pale pink, magenta acrylic paint, and orange craft paint.  I also tore more of my white pillowcase in order to dye it orange.

I decided to work on a wooden block I cut for the piece.  I realized I'd have to sand the top and bottom because I think my saw blade is getting dull.  Yes, I'm a power tool lover.

After sanding the wooden block, I painted it with a wash of the magenta acrylic.  Then I dyed the pillowcase using a recipe I found in a book written by Ruth Rae.  Basically, it's half water, half paint, but because I only had craft paint, I decided to use a bit less water and more paint.

Fast forward two days and all of the dyeing is complete and dry, the pieces have been sewn together, and I'm now ready to assemble the piece.

I thought I would show it in this stage, before I added the embellishments.  This is the first time I've ever used a good stencil, so I didn't do a very good job.  But you can see I used variegated yellow/orange thread, which is all I had in orange.

It was late when I tried to photograph this, so the colors are not the best in my craft room.

No matter what direction I faced it, the colors are simply not representative of the piece.

Using PhotoShop, I attempted to color compensate to get the true colors of the completed assemblage.

Next, I wrapped orange wire around a piece of bark from my tree, and added a pink feather.

I also brushed the higher portions of the bark with orange paint.

The feather is much closer to the magenta color of the fabric, but I didn't try to color compensate.

Here is this week's entry in all its glory.  I sincerely hope you like it.

Although I ran out of time visiting, I got to most of you last week.  However, I noticed some of you are on social media sites I'm not a member of.  These include Facebook, Instagram, Flickr, Tumblr, Goggle +, and Pinterest, to name the ones I remember.  Since I'm not a member of any of these sites, I can't leave comments, and if you're on Facebook, there were a couple I couldn't even see your artwork. I hope to visit everyone this week, even if I can't leave a message.  Thanks for visiting me, though.  I was simply in awe of the gorgeous art I saw last week.  And I would be remiss if I didn't thank Kristin for all the hard work she puts into this fun and colorful summer event.

Great project Elizabeth, love the colours and the embellishments.
You asked about the workshop I attended today, I have made another lady but it's completely different as regards the techniques. I wanted to see if I could combine the Powertex fabric hardener and the Stone Art. Will be posting photos soon and think you might like it.
Have a great WOYWW and happy crafting, Angela xXx

Well, I don't know what is wrong with how you used the stencil, it looks fabulous.. In fact, I think this is one of the best things you'e done! I loved this weeks colours (and yes, I did link my journal page!)

I was wondering where all this paint, wood, and fabric was going and now I see the finished piece and it is fabulous! Now off to see what is on your desk....

It sounds as if your makeup sponge is too soft - you need quite a solid one to use with paint (I gave up with them, and now buy the (quite expensive, but you can rinse it out and re-use it) cut and dry foam which doesn't make the paint splodge quite so much, if you don't use too much at a time!! have fun playing...

This is gorgeous! I'm glad you Photoshopped one to show how vibrant and saturated the colors are - like a yummy ice cream sherbet.

I never used to care for orange, but now I'm loving pink and orange. Nice piece you made!

Thanks for the blog visit earlier. The solder I got is called paste solder and comes in syringes so you can just put a little dab at your join and solder away. Kate Richbourg show how to use it in her free Craftsy class, Micro Torch Basics. http://www.craftsy.com/class/micro-torch-basics/130?_ct=cx-udhebbut-sbqii&_ctp=watch,130

What a fun piece you created and that certainly is a big wooden block. When I think of wooden blocks I think of more ATC size...being 'friends' with power tools clearly has its advantages. :-)
Your stenciled heart and flower turned out beautifully on all of those great hand dyed and layered fabrics!
I am a big fan of that color combo too.

I really liked your composition. Layers, colors, they all blend in beautifully. I am also trying to work on fabric every week, with a small printing project. Did you use a brush with the stencil? It looks good and i do not mind a bit moving here and there. But if you want more precise results you could use a sponge with less paint, in two rounds. I usually cut a piece from an ordinary kitchen sponge. It works :)

Catching up, haven't been on computer much lately. I really like this piece. I like the fabric on a block, clever idea. I think the piece of bark ads so much depth and texture. Good work!

Very original and creative piece of work! I love how the fabric looks at the sides. I also found that it's very hard to get the colours right when you photograph or scan pinks and oranges.....

What a wonderful project for this color challenge. I love all the textures you've got going there. Such a treat for the eyes.

It was interesting to see how you put all the layers together to make this beautiful piece. One of the things I am liking about SOC is all the different types of art people are creating from the palette colors.
