Journal 52, Week 10: Coloring book inspiration and more

For Week 10 of Journal 52, we were asked to grab a coloring book, or draw our own images and color them.

So, this evening, after my friend Scott fixed my scanner, I give you my "Color"ful birds and step you through how I created them.

Since I don't have little ones (except those with four legs), I have no coloring books.  And I was not about to try to draw anything.  So I went to the internet and found coloring pages I could work with.  I was going to fussy cut these, then decided I preferred to cut around them because I didn't want to accidentally cut one of the black lines.

I painted the dirty, used file folder white, then, before the paint was dry, I added the images.  I didn't have to worry about cutting part of the black outlines, because I accidentally painted over them instead!

I needed the paint to dry, so showered, went grocery shopping, then grabbed this very, very old set of crayons from my basement studio.

Imagine how shocked I was when I returned with the crayons to find this mess I had caused by not using a fixative on my printer inked images.   And even though the file folder and images were not dry, it was too late to turn back now, though.

I thought I would take a photo of these very old crayons, that have barely been used.  I bet we all wish they were that price now!  48 crayons for less than $1.00 (USD)

I tried to color these using these old crayons, and I also tried to cover the mess I had created as best I could.  I hope the mess isn't too distracting.

And because these birds also qualify for the challenge prompt "Things With Wings" at Art Journal Journey, I'm entering this journal page there, too.

Thanks as always for visiting and for your generous and kind comments.

Great job Elizabeth... Sometimes it's just so relaxing to color in a coloring book with simple crayons. :) ♥

don´t care too much about the smearing of the printer´s ink. i´ve experienced that Thing so often and seems i´m not able to learn a Fixative (as i also suppose These sprays are not very healthy). similar with dye inks, i also get them smeared a lot. but i don´t care a lot...
searching for the Images in the net was a good idea... not sure if i had thought about this...

Very clever to reverse the image for interest! The smearing just gives the second one more character.

As a child I colored endlessly; I loved it! I'm sure I went through many of these vintage boxes of crayons!

Glad Scott got your scanner fixed!

Fun to play with coloring book images...smearing ink is never a good surprise but you worked it out nicely E!

I have had the SAME thing happen to me so many, many times, that now the very first thing I do is use a fixative. Even though my new printer says "ink is water proof when dry" I don't take any chances.....grin.

I like the fact you chose to print one and the other in a mirrored image, they look great together.

Oh yes, I do wish I could get a box of 48 crayons for less than a dollar and have them be Crayola! The cheap ones from the Dollar Store are awful, I now just use them (cause the Gds won't even use them) to melt onto projects.

I hope to get something done for J52 today, after a few more hours of work in the back yard.

Gorgeous birds, loving the mirror imaging and isn't it great your Crayolas still work!

Not sure about this Elizabeth but i think i read somewhere that clear gesso can be watered down and used as a sealant. You need a wide nozzle and only make a small amount as you don't want to keep the excess.

Might try this myself and see if it works, not sure where i found the idea so can't give credit, sorry :-) xxx

Love your love birds - collar doves at the caravan have been making a lot of cooing - especially early morning but when they sit together on top of the bird table they look as though they could carry these hearts! Hubby showed an interest in colouring so bought him a colouring book with quite detailed images for Christmas! He still hasn't started it!!! Hugs, Chrisx
