Journal 52, Week 19: Photography

Over at Journal 52, Chelle's 19th prompt was Photography.  I was delighted to read that, because I spent an entire day in my veggie garden and was anxious to get the photos on my blog.  I'm not one to waste ink, since I don't really journal, so I didn't plan to print these out and use them in my Week 19 entry, but I will gladly share what I did today.  And there are several many photos, too.

It actually started yesterday

when I went to our local hardware store to purchase a few herbs.

Now you know why I've been absent from visiting.

I even mentioned on yesterday's blog post that I had a long list, which was true.

I actually started before it was light out, but I couldn't take any photos until around 6:30 am.  By that time, I had filled the extra pots with potting soil and compost,

and removed the pots from the east side of the garden.

It was at that time that I attempted to level some of the leaves that had gathered over the winter.

As I laid the cardboard down, my neighbor's dog came to visit Bleubeard and me.  Bleubeard headed for the safety of the house, even though he is bigger than my neighbor's tiny Chihuahua.  At that time, I also had all the pots filled,

and had the ones on the east end in place.  Since I was beginning to see progress, it was at this point I took a short break.

As I sat and drank my coffee, I noticed all the birds and bunnies running through my yard.  I even managed to get several photos of these three, but not the two bunnies or the robin that darted in and out much of the morning.

They froze and allowed me to take many photos

until the mother bird tried to draw my attention away from her babies who were hiding in the foliage in my flower bed.

But it was time to lay out those three bags of leaves and water everything.

Not sure I like the mess, but if I'm ever going to get my lasagna garden going again, it's crucial.  Of course, there was a lot of cleanup involved when I spilled the leaves in the pots I had carefully removed them from before I set them (the pots) in place.

At this point, the plants that had overwintered and the new plants I purchased, were planted.

Then it was time to plant the seeds I had purchased during the winter, most of which were different types of basil.

By this time I also

had hammered the nails to the fence and added

string which should help guide my blackberries as they grow.

Then it was time to finish by adding the remainder of the old tiles my neighbor gave me.

I tried to utilize the two sizes he gave me, and created as pleasing a pattern as I could make considering the number of tiles I had available.

But this is supposed to be a post about journaling and creating art.

So, here is my entry for Week 19.  I admit it's quite unconventional, but I'm asking you to choose your favorite photo from today and envision it placed behind the mat.

It can be any photo from the garden,

as long as it comes from Week 19's post.  How's that for passing the buck?  If you were tired like me, you'd find a shortcut, too!  And thanks for the visit to my garden photography as I spent my day in strenuous activity.

For those of you females who live in the states, have a lovely Mother's Day, whether you're a mother or not.

i think your garden itself is the art :) my favorite photo, though, is the 3rd one from the top -the close-up of the plants you bought.

i have a few herbs -spearmint, german thyme, rosemary and oregano- in pots on my little patio this year. i need to do some research to find out if any of them would over-winter in the house if i brought them in. they never survive outside in the pots, even if i try to protect them.

What a lot of work you accomplished. I only planted dill, rosemary, mint and basil again this year. They seem to be what I use the most of.

Had to laugh at the J52 page. I think I would insert the picture of all the flowers, but then again I like a lot of color.

Thanks for the Mother's Day wishes.

What a lot of work... I will never understand with the heat you get that you don't bury the pots in the soil... they would keep the roots cooler and damper. I am looking forward to going home and planting herbs for me this time! Oh so many things I want to do... LOL

WOW, you have been hard at work my friend!! I love how excited you get to start your garden, Rich is the same way. We have only the onions in for now.

Great pictures of your progress! It's hard to pick just one picture but I like the 7th one up from the bottom and the close up of the herbs or of the birds, sorry I can't choose just one either. Any of them would tell the story of your day in the garden well.
Let us know what you choose please! Hope you relaxed when it was all done and maybe even relax again today.
I will see you for T Time tomorrow, posting mine later today.

Everyone seems to be in the garden this time of year. You did lots of hard work but will be rewarded in the end.

Gardening takes so much time and effort but it's so nice to walk outside and pick something fresh to eat right from the yard.

Well now you've inspired me!! I have no gardening talents whatsoever - lol.
I love the photo of the bird family for sure, although whichever one you choose will be amazing :)

Looks like the herb garden is taking shape...even though we are in the middle of rehab on the new house, I want to put a garden in because there is finally so much sun....crazy huh...but I will have some big areas after we clear out this week and want to put veg and herbs in a kitchen type potager in the middle of the lawn...a long hose and some good mulch and I will be good to go. xox

That was one long day and you got so much accomplished! I finally planted my basil seeds but for now am taking them in at night until it warms up and stays warm!

You definitely have been busy out there!!! I've been spending most of my free time outside working too. It's hard work but I love it :) My flowers so far this year have been really beautiful. I lost a lot of my perennials this past winter so I've had to replace them and using the opportunity to move things around a bit.
