Lest We Forget

Every year I try to commemorate 9/11 on my blog.

I had really just started blogging in 2006, when I created this page in an altered book to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the event.   It's hard to see the images on the page, which includes a transparency of the US flag super-imposed over the twin towers.  Added to that are where the airplanes hit, flight numbers, the time of each attack, and the number of people who died in the Twin Towers that day. Unfortunately, I used a mottled blue glaze background, making it hard to see the towers, etc.

At the very bottom I show the other two plane numbers, their final destinations, and the number of passengers and crew who also died that day on each flight.  I actually showed this on my blog on September 11, 2009.

In 2008, for the seventh anniversary, I went to the internet and found this image.

In 2011, I got personal with my memories of that day.  If you've never seen this post, I implore you to do so.  It would mean so very much if you click the link directly above.  I know many of you who visited my blog on September 11, 2011 saw the post. I appreciate all the lovely, heartfelt, and personal comments you left, too. Those of you who are new to my blog are in for a bit of my personal history.  I still cry when I read the post, as I cried when I wrote it.  And before you ask, I still have not dug my photos from my trip to the WTC out of my wet basement.

And finally, from last year (2012) I made this stand alone piece.  If you want to review how I made it, please go to last year's 9/11 Tea Tuesday post.

Thank you for dropping by today, and please remember how lucky we are to be alive regardless where we live, while sharing our sadness for those 2977 frightened, unwilling, unknowing, or uncooperative souls who perished on this dark day in US history. Let's also remember their families who survived and are still deprived of their loved ones.

In case my number seems a bit off, it's because 2996 persons were known to have died that day, a number which includes the 19 hijackers.  Forgive and forget is a hard pill to swallow on this day of remembrance.

Hi Elizabeth, your post is a very nice tribute and an interesting walk down memory lane in regards to the anniversary of that sad day. I did a small tribute album on my Facebook today.

Thank you for sharing so many photos on you larger post a couple of years back. Many of the images were ones I had not seen before...like the elevator shot in the South bldg. I take it, someone got that picture before it collapsed?

My husband and I went to the Memorial Museum two years ago and it was very moving.

I still cry when I watch the memorial services on the television. I make it a point to pause at that time. I remember where I was that day, in Boston in a high rise building watching the second aircraft crash into the trade center and not quite comprehending for a moment and then the panic to get out of the city.

I will never forget it and thank you for sharing on your blog.

Have a blessed day my friend!

I never had the pleasure of going up into the towers like you did, but we did go visit the building site a few years back and I could feel the tangible presence of everything that happened there and the tears began to flow. I hope we never forget, but I fear that just like the Holocaust, people will lost sight of what happened....Thanks for sharing. xox

Even after all this time, I find it difficult to post about this or even read about this. My husband worked in and around these buildings as well as frequented the building that was bombed in 1993. His childhood friend perished when she went back in to help others get out. We spent every holiday taking our daughter to visit this area and see the magnificent views and holiday decorations. It took over a year before we were able to visit the site in person, and we were still shocked. When we brought our daughter to school a few weeks ago, it broke my heart to not see that familiar skyline.

A really lovely tribute post to honour those lost on that day. I was at the doctors in Johannesburg and in the waiting room they had a TV and it came on that the first tower had been hit.... I remember calling Chris and telling him to go find a TV... it was the silence in the waiting room I recall... nobody could take in the horror unfolding in front of us.

hello, Elizabeth, even if we were so far away, it is still something I will never forget. It was evening here and it came on the TV. It seemed so unbelievable and I remember how horrified we were that this could actually happen. thanks for sharing this and your previous post.

Hello again, what an amazing piece you wrote back then. The details and pictures really tell the horror story of that day. How lucky that you weren't harmed in any way. It's a day none of us will forget or what we were doing that day. I love that you have done these art pieces, each one is beautiful.
That day I had my mom and my grandma ( the one I shared about yesterday) over for Grandparent's Day. I was homeschooling at the time and had the girls 4 & 3 make lunch for us and then we colored. The girls were enjoying this so much and it was so fun doing this. My sister called and said to turn on the tv, there we saw the planes and the towers being hit. The tv played it all day long, I couldn't take watching and listening to this 24/7. I was pregnant with Sam who arrived 2 months after this. I won't get into details here but it changed me and brought a dark period to me for months afterwards. Thankfully the darkness went away and I was ok but will NEVER forget the feeling of that day and the pain so many suffered. It's hard to explain this day to your children years later, I had to tell mine in bits and pieces as they got older. I didn't tell Sam in time though and his first grade teacher went into detail that day of remembering and he came home scared for days. Now it's getting time to tell Sienna and I hope she will be brave about this and not worry as Sam did.
Thank you Elizabeth for giving us a chance to share here today and send prayers and love to all those involved that day.

I'm a little late posting my pictures from yesterday. Just wanted the morning break but will do it soon as kids are in school. I'm happy you have made time for blogging this week, now I won't have to miss you.

Now to read your post below.

A fabulous tribute Elizabeth. I still cry when I see footage of that dreadful day and still am in wonderment as to what it was all for. I wasn't directly affected but remember a client who was frantic as his wife and children were in NY, but thankfully had stayed at her mother's the night before. As well as a friend who's nephew was due to be flying that day, but ran out of money so he had to wait a few days.
I am hoping to go to NY in a little over two years and the Memorial is top of the agenda.
