A time to sew

I gathered some of the fabric and lace I've dyed over the past several days and began sewing.

I've auditioned various items for this quiltlet, and have eliminated the pieces you see in the upper right side of the photo.  I've already sewn the center assembly, using a piece of gifted hand dyed wet wipe, some of my hand dyed paper, and a photo printed on photo paper, over which I've sewn brown tulle.  The background is some of my onion skin dyed fabric, while the pink fabric on the left and lace under the tape measure were dyed using alcohol and ink.  Other than assembling and sewing the various elements, nothing is attached.  I have not started the backing or added batting, either. This piece measure approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches.  For some reason, I believe it needs something more.  Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

This is Day 14 of AEDM.

The lace that was dyed with ink looks so cool.

As far as suggestions, as I'm looking at this, the top lace element doesn't look "connected" to the rest of the design. Maybe something coming down from that to the main backing (onion skim paper?) to tie that element in and make it looks like it belongs. Looking at the theme of this, buttons, maybe?

I'd never thought about combining sewing and paper 'til I saw this. Such a cool concept. Thanks for posting and I hope this comment helps you. :-)

Editing can be dangerous, but I guess it is an necessary evil of being an artist. Sometimes the editing can shut us down other times bring us to something we fall deeper in love with. Good luck!

interesting...I like all your fabrics, and the onion skin die especially. Maybe it needs something linking the top to the bottom, up one side? looking forward to seeing the finished piece.

Ooh Elizabeth, that's coming along beautifully. Lol as far as advice goes I'm pretty much clueless but I think a couple of the ladies before me have the right idea, i.e. linking the top panel to the centre piece somehow??
Huge hugs x x x x

Wonderful! I really like this, Elizabeth. Of course you aren't done; these things kinda evolve. As you work it'll come together. I was wondering if some buttons might not be a good addition.

This is really looking good! Maybe it just's me, but I see the link from the top to the bottom needing some kind of flower. Roses? Beautiful, yet tough and gritty? Can wait to see what you decide.

I think you need embellishments to pull it together. Guns and roses would be interesting.

Beautiful colors and so much variety in fabrics already. I'd like to see that pink lace turned vertical and think the "connection" between top to bottom could be a few white mother of pearl buttons or maybe some brown stitching. I wouldn't actually "connect" the top/bottom pieces but something along the left side to draw the eye down. That's my 2 cents.

I think your piece is coming along beautifully! I personally love to add a little bling to everything I do so pearls or lace going another direction etc. would look good I think but this piece is yours.... so just carry on! Your work is great!

Oh it's looking wonderful already E! Brown and pink compliment one another so beautifully

When I think of cowgirls it makes me remember my Annie Oakley bike in Kindergarten...it had fringe on the handlebars and cool saddle bags too

Maybe your cool cowgirl could use some fringe?

your quiltlet is going to be fantastic! yes, it reminded me of Annie Oakley too...some good suggestions here from your commenting pals. of course I like the idea of buttons. the wide pink lace at bottom left tends to lead my eye 'off the page'...can you use another piece of it elsewhere in the quiltlet also? or trim a narrow piece off and use it in the upper right-hand corner in addition to the piece at bottom left? adding a narrow bit overlapping the two brown fabrics might help 'connect' the parts as some mentioned previously...whatever you do, the colors and textures are amazing and beautiful. have fun!

I love what you're doing, but I think it needs something more.

You'll know what to do. Sometimes when you come to a block you just have to leave it be for a while and come back to it. This is a beautiful start. :)
