How much blog space do YOU have?

Looks like I caused a stir today among my blog readers because of the comment I made about posting my photos in low res (see this post). The questions started flying about my "allowable blog space." I started answering individual messages, then thought, gee, I can show you better than I can tell you. So here is a tiny tutorial that might put your mind at ease or alarm you, depending on what you find.

PLEASE NOTE: This applies to Blogger only. This information does not apply to other blog providers.

Go to "new post" in Dashboard. Click on the "add image" icon. Do you see the space you have left? It's to the right of the "cancel" and "upload image" buttons. Click to enlarge the above screen capture and it will show you where to look.

If you have more than 50% space available, you are more than likely in good shape. If only about 20-25%, then you will probably start saving your photos on the lowest settings allowed, like I do. I have NO IDEA what happens when you run out of blog space. I do know that you have the same amount of space regardless whether you spread your photos over several blogs or not.

Thanks for the tutorial! I will have to check this out. I am not too concerned since my photos are 99% low res, but maybe I should see how far I am from needing to start a new blog. :)

I checked my usage-- it says I am currently only using 4% - WOW! That's good. When you use up your allotment, you have to pay to get more space. Free is always best (I think!) Thanks again for the heads up.

Oh thank you. I m fairly new to blogging and any help is really useful. I just checked and I'm just at 1 % but I do save my images at 300 PSI (Not really sure what that means but think its too high)so perhaps I should make them less. I like free too !
Love your blog as I'm a journal maker too. And love altered books, must put some of mine on soon.

I will check mine out, although I just started blogging a few months ago, but the real reason I'm here--is that I passed the award on to you. I hope you accept awards--head on over to my blog.

For as many times as I've uploaded pics, I've never noticed this little "fine print" box! Thanks, Elizabeth. I'm still OK, and I've only used 14% of my space. Whew! What a relief!!! Hugs, Terri xoxo

A few tips that I hope might help:

You can also use Flickr (which is free) to host your photos then have them displayed on Blogger. This way, you don't run out of room on Blogger. (I'd recommend just Googling "using Flickr with Blogger" for details on how to do this...I haven't used it, but know it is fairly easy to do)

If you have Photoshop (Sorry, not familiar with other programs, but I'm sure they have something similar), try the "SAVE FOR WEB" feature when saving a photo. Try saving a copy of your original as a web version, then upload that copy to Blogger. The photo can be saved at a much smaller size (i.e. take up less room) without affecting the quality (it won't look good if printed but will look just fine on the computer screen).

Hope that helps!

I have already decided that when I use up my 3GB of free space on WordPress, I will open a second blog. I have 26.1% remaining at present with close to 1,090 blog posts since Oct 2007. I can't bear to post without a photo or two and really enjoy nice closeups. Eye candy is a lot of the attraction for me in blogland.
When you get close to the max space allotted by Blogspot, they may start sending upgrade notices. I have no interest in paying to blog.

Interesting post Elizabeth.
I do not think it would hurt me to go back and downsize some of my photos ... in my spare time LOL!

I used up my blog space after about two years of posting on several of my blogs. I could have and did for a while go in an delete photos to make more room. But that became a hassle and I did not really WANT to delete the photos from previous posts, nor did I want to post smaller than LARGE photos. So I shelled out $20 for a huge amount more of GYEBYTE space. I do not remember how much but A LOT. And if I have to pay $20 every year or two it's fine by me.

There's another reason I make my images only so big - theft. I personally know at least one person who prints out images she finds (I've told her it's stealing. Anyway, if you save them in lower res, then when they're printed they're blurry.

Also, if you show the same picture more than once then go into HTML and reference the same picture. Then it's not out there multiple times.

And if you get too full? Little boxes with X in them show up where the pictures were.
